Under the brake master cylinder. There is some rust, but the hole is obviously factory. No mention of it that I could find in the Hayne's manual I have.
And the other picture is of the plastic/rubbery piece that fits in the hole.
Thanks,
Russ
I never could figure out why did that...I'm sure someone knows.
Yup, wish I knew, too. It was missing on my car when I got it, but the hole was there. I secured another rubber piece from a donor car. It's like an access hole - but for what?
Chris
id say its a acess hole to inspect the bushing and hardware of the front suspension. That atleast my best guess my car doesnt have the rubber cover thing either.
But why on one side only? That's my curiousity.
Chris
Prolly the same reason the guys around here only pull one sides wheels on cars when doing inspections.
The hole IS an access hole for upper suspension on the front driver side. There isn't one on the other side because there is more clearance on the other side to access the suspension stuff.
Hmmm....interesting....but if you look at the way the hole is BLOCKED from above (master cylinder/booster, ignition module, hood and clutch cables), I can't really think that's the case, since it's really hard to get at, and would not really serve a purpose if accessed from above. Can't agree just yet.
As far as inner fender clearances, there is about the same amount on both sides to get to the suspension....I'm judging this by the fact that my car is completely torn down, and I cannot see any real difference between the "shapes" of the inner fenders. I still think that something is missing here - I need to check my shop manuals.
Chris
Wow. Glad I am not the only one who isn't sure. :-)
I tend to agree with Dave about it's supposed to be an access hole. I think the reason it is only on one side is because the battery is in the way on the other. But not sure it would really help. Guess I will find out when I get around to taking the front suspension off.
Russ
It helped me in no way whatsoever when I removed, restored, reinstalled the front suspension. Mystery hole!
Chris
hi, what year car is it? i have right now a '73 and no hole. i have had (though out the years) just about every year and have had no holes. i can remember my sister had a '78 and no hole. i think someone cut that hole. but for what reason i don't know. all the pinto's i know and have seen, have no hole there.
that holes factory my 78 bobcat has it too.
my 74 pinto also has it but its covered by i believe steel with 2 screws.
bob
Mid seventies models have steel plates, Later models have a rubber plug/cover. I was able to get a rubber cover from a member here. the hole is factory, that is for sure. I take The cover off and put it in the glove box when i take the car in for an alignment so the shop doesn't loose it.
If you've ever removed the MC you will know what this whole is for when you go to removed the left MC bolt!
I could see where they might put that hole there for a power brake setup...but manual brakes don't need the hole.
You know, looking at this hole again, and the proximity of the inner fender to the suspension, it becomes clear that this hole is needed for working on the suspension, as suggested early in this thread.
I didn't think that was the case previously, but the driver's side setup is preety tight. It has nothing to do with manual or power brakes. My car came with manual brakes, I have since swapped to power, this hole has no relation to that setup whatsoever.
Chris
I realize the hole is there if its a power or non power brake car...I was just making a comment...get a clue

Oh my goodness Mr. tighty pants, I didn't mean to rain on your little parade.
Barney's on at 11, he's making comments, too! Can you say "comment? Sure, I knew you could.
Realize while you're at it that you're also a moron. Maybe that's the issue - you haven't realized that yet.
Nighty night!
why you gotta be such an butt dude...wasn't even talking to you
oh geeez i'm sorry...I didn't realize you were from Texas...I guess everything is bigger in Texas...even the buttholes like you
He said "butthole". How clever, here's a gold star for Pony Boy.
Actually I'm not from Texas >fail<, but I'm glad you could muster up the brainpower to do a search.
Since you are into clues, here's a clue for you - if you are talking to somebody specifically, it's a good idea to add a quote so that people know if you are directing a comment at them or not. Your reply followed mine, so it was directed at me.
In the meantime, you can quit the immature BS anytime and stop sending me hateful private emails. This is my favorite part of the internet - some dilwad puts on his cybermuscles and becomes a wonderfully powerful and all-self-impressive force who hides behind a screen and spews filth. Happens every day. You must be proud.

OK, This has come to a conclusion now. Please no more fighting..
