Went to Jalopy Jungle today, found two 77 Mustang IIs! One is a V6 manual trans, the other is a 2.3 Auto trans. The V6 has two manual transmissions sitting where the passenger seat should be, the 2.3 has the Auto still installed, but missing the shifter.
The V6 has a complete 8" rear in it, the 2.3 has a semi complete 6.75" rear!
I wanted the 8" from the V6 and the auto from the 2.3 but the axle was $180 and the transmission was $200, can't afford that right now.
I settled with the 6.75" brake drums, the clutch cable and adjuster tube from the V6, and the horn button from the V6 (sport wheel).
Would love to have a V6 with manual tranny, no doubt!

Wow great find! I'd love to find a 2.8 manual trans also :hypno: Got the bellhousing, been looking for the transmission and flywheel for some time now.
2.3stangii, the car still has the bell on it, I don't know if they flywheel is on it or not though. And like I said, there are two manual transmissions on the passenger side floorboard....
I still think $200 for a transmission is to much though. Flywheels are like $35 though, I think.
Nice find!!!! you actually got me to thinking, I should look under the rear end of that car I grabbed the console from, maybe there is a rearend I can use. how do you know if it is a 8? thanks
8" has a smooth rear housing. If it has a bolt on cover its the 6 3/4"
$180 for the axle isn't bad at all. They can go for a little more than that here in the Phoenix Az area. I have one that I need to sell...just taking up space.
Here in So. Cal. the standard rate at Pick A Part for a complete, drum to drum rearend is $99.99 with a $15 core charge. (side note, FYI the 6-3/4" drums do NOT fit the 8" rear - the center hole is too small).
Pick A Part also has a monthly 50% off sale. So if you find an 8" on that day they are only $49.99!
There is the L.A. county 9.75% sales tax and they throw on a "environmental" fee that follows no rules, but is about 5% of the purchase price. So the regular rate is about $135 and the half price rate about $75 "out the door." (second side note, If you are in the L.A. area and see a 8" don't wait for the 50% off sale. There is some guy who goes there daily and snags just about every 8"!!!)
Two years ago things were a bit cheaper and I got my drum to drum 8" OTD for $116 without it being the 50% off sale.
The 8" looks like the image below. The important thing to look for is no bolts that would hold on a rear cover.

Thanks for the pic and the detailed info on what to look for. :)
Went to pick a part, Ontario, Monday, there was a Mustang II in the yard. V6, interior was pretty decent still. Clean Body, not much taken from it. I immeadiately looked under at the rear end, the Gears were gone but the housing was intact. I am thinking of going back for the housing this weekend.
Al...
That would be a good idea. there are lots of performance parts and hear sets available for the 8".
Here's a side - front-ish pic of the blue Mustang II coupe at the yard. I forgot to snap a pic of the black one when I was there. The black one is a fastback.
middle consoles to buy?
None, I was hopping to find one but the interiors were pretty much called for by the time I found the cars. :( Was thinking of getting the wheels for the winter when I swap over to studded snow tires but I just don't have the money right now. Would be nice to buy the whole 77 Fastback to rebuild and restore, but again, no cash. :( 77 Mustang II Fastback is one of my dream cars. Put a cobra II kit on it, paint it white with blue stripes and appropriate decals, swap out the 2.8 for a 302 and I'd be set! Hope I didn't offend anyone by saying that. lol
