What are you guys with efi engines doing?
Been looking around online and the prices are just killing me. So far the best priced external pump that runs from 30-65 psi is a Summit Racing brand for over $200. Ouch. What I have seen online says that this engine will need around 45psi.
I searched here and found some useful information. Especially a link to BCBroncos I think it was. They have a 2 pump setup that uses an accumulator between them, one pump being low pressure and then the accumulator(has a big fuel filter) and then the high pressure. The total price on this would be close to the single Summit pump.
I am only running a stockish 2.3L. would the 2 pump system be overkill? I would have lots of room in the engine compartment for the accumulator and second pump, plus most of the fuel line would be low pressure.
What about having my gas tank converted for an internal pump? Those are pretty cheap, but I am thinking converting the tank wouldn't be cheap at all.
Thanks,
Russ
I can't delet my own topic???
Oh, well.
Summit's search engine isn't working so hot. I just found one of their own brand for about $85 for an external in line. And it goes up to 85 psi.
Now that is more of what I was expecting.
But still curious to know what others have used.
Thanks,
Russ
The 2 pump setup is gonna do the same thing as the single pump setup. The older Turbocoupes and svo mustang came with the 2 pump setup most people just delte one of the pumps and run a bigger pump less parts that can go out on ya.
As for the fuel tank i have seen people weld a sump on their original tank and hook up there inline pump that way or just straight too the original lines on the original sending unit but if you use the original sending unit lines the smaller tube that is gunna get used as your return line will have to be drilled out because it is a vent tube and the inside hole isnt actually as big as the tube.
Third option is to do what im doing and thats fuel cell and inline pump.
Ill trade ya on the prices of fuel pumps the ones im looking at are 300+ LOL
Well, this car actually has a return line already. Found that out when I was trying to track down a fuel leak.
I wish I could go with a fuel cell, but don't know if I can. This is a hatchback, and I don't want that in the trunk. Not sure if I could find one big enough that would fit where the stock tank goes. Plus I have heard about the liners going bad, etc, on them. Don't want to have to replace it every year or two.
Thanks,
Russ

My 78 has a return line/vent line too but supposedly that line is pin hole size at the sending unit and needs to be drilled out to work as a return line. Atleast for efi i havent checked on mine sice i just planned to go with a fuel cell.
As for the fuel cell my bobcats a hatch car too but i will be cutting out the trunk floor metal and mounting the cell that way so i can still have a floor back there hopfully. As for the liner fuel cells i plan on using a plastic cell or aluminum i dont want a steel cell with a liner prolly gunna stay away from the fuel cell foams too.
How are you thinking about doing the filler neck, or are you even going to have one? I saw on Summit's site they have a couple of different fender fill kits, but I just can't get over having a tube running up from the middle of the floor. Kind of takes away any useful area. I need to be able to carry a spare and misc. fluids just in case. I don't know. Maybe I am just too old anymore. A fuel cell used to get me excited. Now all I see are the drawbacks.
What size are you going with? I would want one at that holds at least as much as the stock one. If they had one that had the fill on the side it wouldn't be so bad.
Russ
This is a foam filled dragster tank. Spare is installed at an angle. Fred :)
If i put in a filler neck ill just do what map351 did and build a fake floor above it and plumb the original filler into the cell. Or i have thought about putting the filler right between the tailights the you coul just build a smaller tunnel to cover the hose ran to the cell.
I have been looking at 12-16 gallon cells i think the stock tank is like only like 12?
There are companys that make custom cells that are setup anyway you want them but they get kinda spendy.
Fake floor. I LIKE that idea! Then I could put the battery back there too.
Yeah, original tank is around 12-13 gallons. I would like at least 15 if not 20. But have to at least keep it no less than stock.
I would definitely run the fuel filler to the original location vs. the rear like on the older mustangs. That way if you get rear-ended there is less chance of gas going all over.
I am going to have to do some rethinking about all this. :-)

Russ
