Title: Pinto tire size???
Post by: Jefferoni on July 02, 2010, 08:27:49 PM
One more question and I'll shut up for a while!  I'm a new Pinto owner, and a very proud one.  I found a great Runabout with just 12,000 miles on it, and it is in great shape.  It had the original tires that were terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad.  I live in a small town, so I have just one place to get tires.  I told them the original tires were sized BR 78-13.  When I asked for replacements, they said the original size wasn't made any more and that I could ONLY get 185-70-13 blackwall tires for the Pinto.  I bought them, but I hate them because the new tires are two inches shorter than the original tires and look like compact spares.  So, please help me out here.  Where do you guys get replacement tires for your Pintos that are approximately the same size as the original tires?  And can you get them in whitewall like the originals?  The guys at the tire place swear there is no way I'll find tires similar to the originals, and if I can, they will pay for them!  To be honest, I'm not as much interested in free tires at this point as I'm interested in getting something that will look good and similar to the originals.  Right now, with the new smaller tires on the car, it looks terrible.  Help!  Jeff

Glen:  I already tried tirerack.com, but they seem to have only the low profile tires (smaller height) in the 13 inch size.  I'd like to find tires that are similar in height to the original tires so they look like the originals.  Anyone know of any that are similar in size to the original tires on the Pinto?

Have you tried Coker?  They might have something.

original tires were sized BR 78-13.

Jeff, looking at some conversion tables alpha to metric sizes

ALPHA NUMERIC              P-METRIC
BR 78-13 and BR 70-13  = P185/80/13 or P195/75/13 or P195/70/13

maybe that will help for size, Pintos do have rather large wheel wells, Ford designed and advertised in the early days - "large wheel wells made to put bigger tires" - unfortunatly our options for wheels and tires are limited 30+ years later unlike in the '70s and '80s

185/80/13's and anything in a 195/??? is tough to find these days. 185/70/13's are what I look for in a "close" to stock size.

whitewall = almost impossible to find but they are starting to make a comeback. Have started to see them pop-up from time to time but usually in a very small 13" (155/80/13)

white wall is too wide & it may be still too short but for me the killer is the price :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:

Thanks, guys.  I'll try to contact Coker to see what they have in the 13 inch size.  I'd take a blackwall with pleasure if they have one in the size close to what the Pinto originally had on it.  Again, thanks for the help!  Jeff
