79 with 2.3 and an auto. Anything to watch out for?
Thanks,
Russ
take 'em as a set out the top. hood off, one lift point between cyl 1 and 2. yank the starter first. make sure the trans is drained or has a yoke in it. pull the 2 main motor mount bolts once you have it hung. its easy to pull the mounts off the motor at that point which really gives you a lot of extra wiggle room. oh yeah put a floor jack at the back of the trans to get the angle right as swinging the bottom of the bell past the crossmember is the toughest part.
Happy wrenching

Starter has to come off first? Darn. But that is why I asked here. :-)
Thanks,
Russ
don't know if it "has" to but makes life easier. once the exhaust is off its reasonably easy to get to the starter though
don't forget to disconnect the speedo cable from the tranny... I can't tell you how many times I have ripped them off.
Pulled my motor and tranny last October (2.3/manual). OhSix9 put it best - pull them as a unit out of the top. The trick is getting them past the radiator support, which tends to want to get in the way. Starter off? No need at all - just be sure the exhaust is disconnected.
Don't forget:
Gas lines to fuel pump
Exhaust
Drive shaft from tranny
Coolant lines
Radiator out (best)
Wiring to distributor/etc.
Gas pedal linkage
Battery cable
Shifter assembly at trans tunnel
Motor mounts/bolts
...and probably something else I have forgotten. Good luck! In the "PROJECTS" setion, you may want to look at the "Popbumper's '76 wagon" thread to see pics of my motor/tranny removal.

I never take hood off since it can be held vertically. Going over rad support I use come-a-long to nose up engine. Fred
the 'book' says to remove the hood, but like Fred said, you can hold the hood straight up w/ rope or bungies to the back of the car. I also never had to take out the starter, but maybe they are talking about the power lead to the starter.
Last time I did this, I was careful to put a yoke in the trans, because I was trying to not make a big mess. I forgot to plug up the speedometer gear hole, so I poured out a HUGE puddle of ATF anyway. I uttered a few bad words over that one!

Thanks.
I had most of that list down. Although I did forget about the speedometer cable. and I would have forgot to plug it as well.
Got most of the stuff I can do from above done. Took the hood off, it needed to come off anyway, pulled the battery, radiator, and some misc. items off(going to be redoing the engine compartment, so it needs to be stripped anyway).
Working on the exhaust, not sure how to get to the bottom bolt where the manifold meets the pipe. Thinking I may have to just cut the exhaust pipe, it would be quicker.
Took the fan off the engine and it's spacer. Left the pulleys and belt on.
Got all the wiring disconnected and out of the way. Even the little ground from the head to the firewall. Almost forgot that one. Got the cable off of the carburator as well.
Going to have to jack it up next so I can get under it. Kind of dreading that one. It will be the first time I have seen the entire bottom, and I am a bit worried about how much rust I might find. Plus, it is just hard anymore getting down on the floor for me.
Getting up is even harder. :-)
I even went ahead and pulled the grille off. Figured might as well do it now, since it had to come off sooner or later. At least this way I don't have to worry about hitting it with the hoist or something.
Got a whole bunch of pictures, problem is that I had the camera set at 2M, and I have to shrink them before I can upload them. I use Irfan, works well, but I have to do them one at a time.
Tonight will most likely be drain the gas tank night. I need the gas anyway for my other car.
This is going a little slower than I am used to. I am bagging and labeling(with an index card inside the bag) every screw and bolt that comes off, as they come off. Got several bags with one screw in them already. But it beats how I used to do this, which was to put everything into a coffee can and hope I could remember what went where later. :-)
Have I mentioned how badly I miss having air tools?

russ.
using irfanview under the file tab there is an option for batch conversion rename that will allow you to resize batches of pictures in one shot.
Cool! I have been using it for several years now and never knew that I could do that.
Will have to do it tonight when I get home from work.
Thanks!!!!!
