I searched the Forums, and didn't find answer to these questions about fuel tank fires...which hopefully are of interest to all. But first, here's something I found on-line:
"Finally, in September 1978, Ford issued a recall for 1.5 million 1971-76 Pinto sedans and Runabouts, plus all similar 1975-76 Mercury Bobcats, for a safety repair. Each car received a new fuel-tank filler neck that extended deeper into the tank and was more resistant to breaking off in a rear-end collision. A plastic shield was installed between the differential and the tank, as well as another to deflect contact with the right-rear shock absorber. "
My questions:
1) Other than looking for the plastic shields how can I tell if my car has had the modifications? Any pictures available?
2) Will Ford still perform the recall, given their on-going liabilty (probably now, and probably a dumb question)?
3) Anyone else out there who performs the modifications?
Thank you!
Bob there will be a plastic shield in front of tank I will get you picture latter. When my daughter's 73 got hit at over 100 mph the left leaf shackle went through tank and yes there was fuel in the back seat. Fred
Hi
Remove the gas cap and count the screws holding the filler pipe neck to the body of your car, if there is four screws you have the upgraded filler pipe at least (if not there will be only three). The main shield is between the tank and the differential and easy to see. Good luck.
Bob here is sheild looking from rear forward. This is a 74 wagon that was not complied 3 hole filler neck. Fred :)
Fred,
That's fantastic!!!! When I got my Runabout, they gave me that piece (it was in the back), but I couldn't figure out what on earth to do with it. Now I know. You just made my day (again)!!!!!
Bob
Most interesting. It was my impression that the wagon gas tanks did not share the same issues as the sedan, though it apears Fred has proven me wrong since his photo is of a wagon. Hmmm....

Chris I don't think they did on wagon's but to be sure Kim has enough wagon's maybe she can take a looky loo for us. Fred :)
My wagon wasn't recalled. I understood that because the cargo area was longer the tank wasn't close enough to the differential to be a threat.
Good, thanks for the confirmation, that was my understanding as well. Love the exchange of info here.
Chris
My pleasure. I'm glad I could help! :D
I've put the plastic shield on my 73 Wagon. I should have grabbed the filler neck when I pulled it from the 77 bobcat at the junk yard years ago, but wasn't thinking! :(
Still looking for a "recall filler neck" to install.
Take a pick Dave it's FREE you pay shipping. Fred :)
Went home for lunch. Not only do I have the shield for the tank, I also have a filler with 4 screws. Big load off my mind! Thanks once again. This website rocks!!!!
