So , today I took the Cruising Wagon to get some gas for the boat.As always when I was a the pump some one came over to talk to me about the car.I put the gas can in the back and drove home. When I got to the hatch I discovered I left the key in it at the gas station.I could not figure how I started the car without it.I then discovered that my key for my 93 Mustang will start the Pinto!! They are not exact but really close. The pinto key will start the Mustang , although it does bind a bit.The Mustang key will also unlock the drivers door, but not the passenger door or hatch.
That might come in handy if you ever lock your keys in your car :) On my 78 wagon the old key broke off inside the rear door lock,so now I can use any ford type key to open it. The only problem is its so hard to turn,it twists keys up after a while. So I keep a `sacrificial` key on my keyring. I wonder if a blank would work and maybe be more resistant to twisting?

the passenger side doesn't work because it is used less and the pins are still sharp
I had a '69 Dart that would start with my '71 Demon key but not vice versa. They were nearly identical but the Dart lock was worn just enough to let the Demon key work. I heard somewhere that Dodge only had 77 different keys back then. Ford is probably similar.
Yep, Ford also only had a certain number of different keys. They were supposed to ship the cars to different areas but way back when I first started working for Ford, I was in charge of checking in the new cars and servicing them before they went to clean-up. I had to make sure the keycode tag with the keys matched the bill of lading for the car. Once we got two Fairmonts at the same time that had the same keycode.
