Does any one know where you can get the door jamb switches for the dome light?

There are two types of these door jamb switches, the two pole and three pole types. What you are looking for is the three pole type.

O'Reilly's/Schucks has them:

Part # F6035 - $N/A

Autozone has them:

Part # SW110 - $16.99/ea

RockAuto has them:

1S1098 - $5.71/ea

Schucks/O'Reilly's around here (in Idaho) will price match with AutoZone and vise-verse. The Schucks/O'Reilly's website says they are not available online, so you will have to call or go in to see how much it is there, and if they have it in stock or can order it. These places shouldn't charge you for shipping if they have to special order them though!

The original ones have a metal shaft, less likely to break on you, and are not a full plastic unit like these replacements are.

When I need switches, I usually just go to the junk yard and check 70's era Ford cars for them. If they match, I grab them and they are usually dirt cheap and easy to clean up! Every one I've pulled was in working order, but you have to pull hard on them to get them off the socket on the wires, sometimes they will pull the wires off with them, or the socket will break. If that happens, just go to another one and try again.

I see CJ pony parts lists one for 83-93 Mustang that looks just like it.I know the driver side is Three wire and the passenger is two wire. On the drivers side I crossed two of the wires and the light works. What is the third wire for? Is it nessary?

According to the 1978 EVTM, the third wire goes to a reminder buzzer.  It will buzz if you open the door and have either the lights on or the key in the ignition switch.  It is not necessary but a nice feature especially for the head light warning (saved me from a dead battery a couple times).
