Title: Screaming Meanie!
Post by: blupinto on June 04, 2010, 12:03:35 AM
Here's a weird problem for y'all!

Yesterday I took Green Meanie to work because my friend had bags of horse manure for my garden and Meanie was the wagon for the job. Going to work she was ok, but on the way back she made this screaming noise in the area between the back of the engine and the front of the transmission. Third gear is when the screaming starts. It sounds like a mountain lion being electrocuted, or neutered without anesthesia (not that I've heard mountain lions electrocuted or neutered!) She drives the same- no loss of power or difficult shifting. However, she is LOUD!!! The noise hurts my ears. Is it the flywheel? She is downed til it's fixed. I am calling her Screaming Meanie for now.  :(

Geez... that doesn't sound good!  (no pun intended)  PM Jim and I'll bet dollars to donuts he can tell you what's wrong!

Is that what that is!? OK if it is... how difficult is that to fix? Incidentally, Meanie doesn't like going in reverse- her shifter jumps out of reverse every time if I don't physically keep the shifter in R. Happily she doesn't pop out of her other gears (yet). Is this connected? Also, now and then I can't get the shifter into gear at all. Funny thing is, when she's screaming her shifting is ok.

My 76 did that when the transmission ran out of gear oil. The new transmission I put in it a few years back has leaked a little bit every since I put it in. It ran out on a long trip and was fine in 1st gear but you drop that thing into 2nd and MAN did that thing SCREAM. Filled it up with gear oil and its been fine every since. Good ole German 4 speed. How many things can be run totally out of lubricant and not be destroyed. :)
