Well i am wanting a posi-trac setup and better brakes in my 1980 pinto. So what are our options for rear-ends? I searched but didn't find anything other than swapping stock rear-ends around in these cars. I know a 9" would work but i don't see a need for anything of that nature.
8 inch, or a 9 inch from a granada or a 9 inch with disc brakes from a Lincoln Versailles these are the only bolt in rear ends. Or just weld some spring pads on a 8.8 and go from there im gunna be putting the 8.8 with disc outta my TC into my bobcat.
Well that sounds simple enough. what about the lengths cause i got a complete drivetrain that i am going to be picking up from the turbo car and i can get the rear-end while i am there.
i havent found a pinto 8 inch personally but from what ive researched the TC 8.8 is about 61" but a regular 8.8 with drum brakes is only around 59" both the Tc and the drum brake 8.8 use the same center housing the only diffrence is the axle lengths and ive been told the 8 inchs rear found in the pintos are supposed to be 57".
Thats about all i have found out so far the 2 inch extra width on each side wont hurt me so much since ill be buying wheels that have the right offsets for it. But since you already have wheel you might wanna do a little measuring and see if the extra width from either of the 8.8's will work with what your running plus no matter what rear end you run you might have to build a new driveshaft.
if i remember right, the explorer 8.8 out of an explorer with disc is 57 inch hub to hub. i have one for my 41 ford project, i can re-measure it for you tomorrow.

Those are 5-lug correct? what does it take to swap a pinto front end to 5-lug? Is it grenada parts?
The TC's and FOX Mustangs are 4 lug on a 4-1/4" bolt circle like the Pinto. The later Mustangs have the five lug on a 4-1/2" bolt circle. I suspect the Explorer, Ranger, etc. are five lug and one of these has the center section offset ~3" from what I have read.
If you end up with a five lug rear, the front can be converted to five lug. You can get stock size rotors or larger, i.e. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/5-Bolt-Mustang-II-Rotors,1964.html (http://www.speedwaymotors.com/5-Bolt-Mustang-II-Rotors,1964.html)
yes, explorer are 5X4.5. ill get you a measurement after work.

Both ranger and explorers have offset pumkins which is to clear the gas tank in them.
Yeah that sounds right since my ford ranger 2.3 turbo had a 8.8 with the offset for the fuel tank along the frame rail.
Thanks for the link. I know where a 8.8 posi out of a explorer is located. I might just go that route unless i can find a relatively cheap 8" locker.
I know the 8.8 rear ends that was in all fox body cars where 4-lug with exception of 85.5-86 SVO's. IIRC
OH and the explorer 8.8 is 59 3/4" wide
another way to go 5 bolt in the back if the explorer diff is to wide for your rims is to use a fox body 8.8 housing and a pair of left side ranger or rights side aerostar axles with brakes and backings to convert it to 5 lug the axles in a 7.5 and 8.8 are the same so these are very easy to come by. i believe the 8.8 housing in the birds is also the same width as the fox mustangs but is different ( 2 inches wider) flange to flange due to brake and axle differences.
the explorer is 59 and 3/4 wide a crown vic is 64 inches flange to flange. i believe the fox is 57 inches

yep, like they said, 59.75. im pretty sure all explorer 8.8s with locker are 31 spline to boot. i know all irs lockers are, and i know my straight 8.8 out of an 01 explorer is. certain fx4 rangers ran a 31 spline with 410 and torsen diff.
