Hi all:
In the process of restoring the engine compartment on my wagon, getting close to the point of paint (it will be done separately from the rest of the car, I have alreday secured factory color spray cans to carry this out).
Anyway, my question is this. Given that the engine compartment has all kinds of interesting folds/creases/nooks/crannies in the metal, the effort of sanding is somewhat challenging. Already primed, knocked down, and primed again in preparation for 400 grit sanding, does anyone have suggestions on how I might final sand without "breaking through" on edges? Is it just a matter of time and care? Do those "sanding sponges" come in a finer grit that will allow me to roll over the surfaces with less chance of cut-through?
Hoping someone here with experience can chime in. Thanks!
Chris
Unless the primer just didnt lay flat i usually just hit it with a scotchbrite pad.
If you really are wanting the 400 grit paper in there just sand all the big open areas with paper on a block and the uneven nooks and crannys use the paper on your fingers try to stay away from edges as much as possible just lightly hit them enough so the paint has somthing to stick too.

That was just hit with a red scotchbrite and sprayed and it still looks the same now except for a couple spots where i hit it with the new header i put on it. LOL
A Dremel might help in the teeny nooks and crannies.
Timmay has it right
Red scotchbrite pad and go to town.

Not a bad idea, but it would probably be too aggressive - hard to scuff without cutting through to the bare metal with a dremel.

I was thinking with the wire wheel... Dremel Moto Tools have lots of different heads for different jobs.
Oooh... do I sound like a commercial...? :o ::) ;D
Try a soft sponge wrapped with 800 wet sand paper
