Title: ??4.0 V6 IN A PINTO??
Post by: billnall on February 08, 2005, 11:49:22 AM
I am thinking of installing a fuel injected 4.0 with an A4LD trans & rear end from a Ranger or Explorer in my 77 Pinto Wagon. Anybody ever done this? If so how did it turn out? Does anybody know if the rear end will fit?

I remember seeing someone suggest this as a swap, and I'm not sure on the specifics but I think that the fully dressed 4.0 V6 is almost the same weight as a fully dressed 302.

However I'm not entirely certain, I think that discussion was on the old PCCA Yahoo! Group... But I can be sure... I'll see if I can dig it up for ya. [EDIT 5:04PM CST: Sorry dude, I couldn't find the post about that...]

I'm not saying it can't be done, but I'd bet it would interesting. Plus the 4.0 is a torquey motor, for a V6. I'm thinking that you could have fun with that one, and I'm guessing you probably have easy access to a Ranger speaking that you mentioned the swap. If you decide to try it, best of luck bud.

the 4.0 should weigh less than a 302 by at least 75 lb.  the 4.0 is based off of the cologne V6 (2.8).  The 2.8 v6 is actualy lighter than the 2.0 and 2.3's due to less block material.

I think it would be a cool swap, but I'd stay away from the a4ld unless it was recently rebuilt or you're gonna have it beefed up.  Those things have trouble holding up behind 4 cylinder mustangs and just HATE v6's.  I just swapped my a4ld out for a 5 speed in my Bronco II.

At any rate, there is a lot of performance potential for the 4.0. cams, chips, even supercharger kits!  Give a 2.3t a run for its money!
