Title: Anyone Hear of a Ford Caravelle (Pinto in Brazil)?
Post by: 71HANTO on May 24, 2010, 12:34:48 PM
An old high school classmate e-mailed me this interesting tidbit... :hypno:

"In Brazil, where they speak Portugues...(as they might in parts of Spanish Harlem) the word "Pinto" is also slang for a male's genitalia!  In fact, when clueless Ford "introduced" (another inside joke) the Ford Pinto as the perfect 2nd car for Brazil's rising middle class, they had bilboards with a young housewives saying.. ( in translation) "When my husband leaves with his, I need another, Pinto" !!! Needless to say the ad was quickly censored & ford had to change the name of the car to Caravelle, in Brazil. "

I wonder if they re-badged it and if pictures exist. I would love to have some of the badges if they did re-badge the pinto within Brazil. Talk about RARE!

I know about the whole Pinto translation in south america, but I think it was the Corsel that it was changed to. The only Caravelle that I know of is the beautiful Renault Caravelle.

The Pinto that we know was never sold there, the Corcel was. Corcel means Steed in Spanish or maybe Portuguese. The Corcel was to be called Pinto at first, until the obvious translation issue came to play (Makes NOVA look tame).

Any one else know anything?

Thanks Pintopower,

The name Corcel makes sense as to why I could not find a Ford Caravelle with a net search.

So...the moral of this story is...there are alot of "Pintos" driving Corvettes...oh the irony :look:

I found some Ford Corcel photos - it bears a family resemblence to the Pinto, but not nearly as good-looking in my opinion.

Hummm..., from the side it looks like a cross between  65-69 Corvair and a 66-68 Falcon.  From the front it looks like a cross between a 66-69 Rambler American and a Dodge Colt.  Interesting front hinged hood too.  Not too bad looking, but the large overhangs, small tires and elevated height scream for larger tires and a lower stance. Yea, that "Balls dragging on the ground" look would be fitting for a car named Pinto.

It looks nothing like a Pinto, Sportina or otherwise. It does have an Opel-esque quality though... ::)  The only thing remotely Pinto-esque about this Corsel is the FORD lettering and placement on the hood. This thing even has windwings!  Too boxy too. I'll keep my Pintos thank you! ;D

The three lugs come from the cars French origins. It started life as a Renault R12.
