Title: Tubular control arms-stock vs narrowed width?
Post by: russosborne on May 13, 2010, 01:36:01 AM
Speedway has them both for the same price.
Why/when would you need the narrower ones?
I am imagining something to do with tire size?
Thanks,
Russ

Changing wheel offset on the racetrack changes handling. The narrow arms bring the rim face in tighter & allow less backspacing.

Why tubular?  They are not an improvement, in most cases, and often result in poorer ride.

I've installed 35-40 "Mustang II" IFS's into early cars, and IMHO the ones that rode and drove best kept the stock Ford A-arms with strut rods.

we will be swapping out stock mii control arms to narrow tubular on a 38 plymouth.  with the rims we want, they stick out too far and we need the wheel to fender clearance that the narrowed control arms give us.  tubular control arms are supposedly stronger and flex less.  i dont know, ive only used them on the street rods.  never race the stuff.  ive never noticed a difference in ride quality, but then again, i never switched from stock to tube after the car has been driven any distance.  my opinion on them in a close wheel car is, use whatever you have!  but in and open wheel car, stamped just wont cut it.  they lack the clean look for something that will be easily seen.

i cant tell you much when it comes to road racing use or what you may  need them for in your app.  like mike, ive only used the aftermarket mii stuff in streetrods.

Thanks.
Right now i was just pondering future items. I like the screw in ball joints that are used with the tubular arms. The ones I am looking at now do still use the strut rods. If I have to replace the stock ones anyway I figure I might as well go with these.
If I get them later on I will be going with the stock size ones, I just was curious about the narrower ones.
