Title: The mystery Pinto part...
Post by: 78txpony on May 10, 2010, 09:32:43 PM
Anyone knows what this clip is and where it goes?

I found it in a box with other old-new Pinto parts, and I kinda remember it coming off my '78.  If I can figure out where it goes, I would like to put it back on.
It is about 2.5" long and bluish in color.

It looks like it is the clip that holds the upper part of the oil dip stick tube.  It bolts to the intake manifold.

It sure does look familiar, if it's what Tigger says, do you have the same part on your engine, or is it missing? I'm all 2.3's here so I could check tomorrow if need be.

That would be what it is! The upper dip stick tube clip.

I pulled one from the junk yard a couple years ago, let it sit in a box of stuff for a year and vaguely remembered where it went. I put it on back onto my 78 before I repainted the valve cover.

Ummm I dont think thats what it is. I looks to me like it goes on one of the bolts for the intake to the head as a plug wire or hose holder.

Assuming this is a 2.3, the clip for the dipstick tube is welder to the tube. Atleast on all the 2.3's i have and have had.

Thanks for the brain storming so far!
However, I checked this afternoon and my dippy-stick-clip is welded to the tube as mentioned above.
Or is it supposed to hold it way under the intake??

It looks like it will hold a 3/8" tube of some sort.  The valve cover bolt washers are smaller than the imprint on the clip, so it don't go there, either.

Anyone have an original, never tore apart 2.3?
I am getting to understand how this thing ended up in my "parts left over from car repairs" bucket...

It looks like it might be a  clip for the vacuum modulator steel line or maybe trans cooler line?

I wouldn't think Ford would put that on mine, since it has a manual tranny and that is a high dollar part to them...  :rolleye:

I was thinking for the fuel line, but I followed the lines and could not find a logical spot for it...   ??? ??? ???

Been a while since I've seen one of those. If I remember correctly It's either a holder for the transmission modulator line like lugnut said or a bypass heater line for the intake. Been a while since I've seen an older 2.3 and the wife's 88 Mustang is a bit newer with injection. I'm sure someone knows....

I have 2 '77s with manual trans that are pretty much 'unmolested'  Tomorrow I'll try to see if I notice anything like that.  It does look familiar.....
Could it be for the fuel line, near the carb???

Sorry, backup.

Now you're all mentioning vacuum lines. The like that goes on the base of the carb, then it comes out towards the front of the car. It's on a metal 90 degree elbow "tube". I can't recall exactly where the line goes or what it does, but it mounts around the accelerator pump housing on one of the screws.

Here are some pictures my dad took of some vacuum lines on a Pinto at the junk yard. The red is where the clip mounts, the green is the hose that the clip retains.

Thats mounts using a 1/4" or 5/16" bolt. The screw on the accelorator pump is way too small and they don't mount anything to them usually.

I agree, the scar on the clip left from the bolt is pretty big.

The clip part is too small for a rubber hose - it would mash it too much. Would it have been for holding a steel fuel line?  Almost looks like it should hold that line going to the fuel filter, but not sure where it would bolt...

In the pictures below, i do not have a hose that runs in that direction anyhoo.  Hmm.....

Hmm. Perhaps mine is a different part number? I'll try to get pictures tomorrow.

Lemme know what you find, Dave.
I want to get this part off the workbench.
