the 2.0 in my 73 is backfiring through the carb and is really hard to start, as well as intermitintly haveing a major drop in power, i've tried putting a rebuilt carb on it but that didn't help for long, also the timeing jumps around when i check it with a light. thanks a bunch chris
Check the timing belt to make sure it's not slipping. It may be a worn belt or a worn sprocket.

Sounds more like an ignition problem. Do you still have points? Try new points, cap and rotor, and spark plug wires.
I would also check the distributor mechanically. As well as the distributor drive gears and wheels.

This is typical behavior of a timing belt issue. One tooth off and it will cause your car to do all the above.
