Ok I am going from external regulator to an internal regulator. I got an alternator for a 95 Mustang. I have the red wire that runs to the solonoid for battery feed. Got the plug at a wrecking yard for free but they told me it was free because they want to see the car. LOL.
Ok here is a pic of the plug I got just need to know what goes to the big yellow wire? Hot when key is in run position or when in starting position. The little one I believe goes to indicator. Below is pic of alternator and the plug I just got.

Big yellow wire is hot all the time. I ran it to the hot wire
stud on the alternator on mine. I just did this a couple of
weeks ago, and it has been working fine. I checked this
out on my 01 Ranger before I did it. I don't know where it
gets its power from on the Ranger, but I know it is HOT all
the time. I think I may go back and put a fusable link in as
I think it may be on a fused circuit on the Ranger. For sure
it is HOT all the time, as is the wire on the stud, witch goes
directly to the BATTERY. The green/red stripe wire goes to
the exciteter and needs to be HOT when the ignition is in the
run position. It's a real simple system and works really well.
Sorry to be so LONG.

ok so the 2 colored wire needs to be to a wire that is hot ONLY when starting the car?
The yellow hot all the time:

Green /red switched positive, NOT start, but run.

Mike is right on. That is exactly how I wired mine, I just didn't
have a picture. Nice-neat job Mike.

Picture helped a ton, charging like a champ thanks a ton. But now the damn headlight switch took a dump. Dash lights and tail lights only work if your jacking with the switch. Hope they sell those at O'riellys.
There is also tuner/contact cleaner. But that stuff isn't cheap any more either. Also sometimes works on noisy radio pots.
