Title: Can you change a hatchback into a trunk car?
Post by: Pinto5.0 on April 22, 2010, 12:07:29 AM
My '80 hatchback is clean & has a near mint black interior including the dash pad which is why I bought it. I really want a trunk model & was wondering if anyone has ever put the trunk & window in place of the hatch?

Hey anything is possible. But for the amount of body work and the fact youd need a donor car its really more work that its worth.
Id just get a trunk model and transfer everything from one car to another.
Good luck!

I would second that motion   Unless you simply like to cut and weld... it would be a much simpler solution.

Pinto 5.0....well here's an idea, but I'm not sure it'd work.  In 1971 the Pinto came out with a hatchback model, but it looked like a trunk model.  I believe if you could find that 1971 hatch (which was a half window, and solid making it look like a faux trunk under the window), it would probably fit yours.  I'm not a hundred percent sure, you may want to check with Ford.  But if you want the look at least of the trunk model, this would be an easy and relatively inexpensive approach.  I'm sure you could find this hatch thru FordPinto.com, shoot Fred Morgan could probably get you one, and he may be able to tell you if it's interchangeable.   BTW, I don't care if it's trunk or hatchback, Pintos area great little cars..... Hope this helps...Larry

I found a 77 trunk car that Im gonna buy for parts. Im going to drill out the spotwelds & remove all the panels & try to fit the trunk in place of my hatch. Im not a newbie to projects so Ill find a way to make this work. I like all Pinto's myself but I have wanted a black/black V8 trunk car since I was 16. At 44 Im finally going to build it. Ive already spent enough money to have bought a complete car but Im too hardheaded to sell mine off & get another car.

Hey if you have the #&%! to do the swap then thats awesome! I say go for it.
Just take your time and measure and leave more material on the cut off parts than you think youll need so you can trim into the hole.

About being hard headed. Yah i think most of us Pinto guys are just that. Cant tell you how many times i heard "youll never get your money out of it" while spending countless dollars on up keep and redo after redo over the years since 87.
Have fun!

Ill know more once I get the glass out of the trunk car & look at the seams. Ford had a modular approach & It appears that a trunk car is a hatch car with a few panels added. I wish my hatch wasnt so clean but other than the rear floor & a couple small holes up front the body is excellent. Its got a mint black interior thats worth half what I paid for the car & the wiring is untouched. I just cant find a nicer car for the money. Although Im spending a fortune to make it what I want.
