Folks,
I inherited a pinto cruising wagon which I have made my avatar. It is a restorable vehicle with title. I haven't looked at it thoroughly yet.
If I got the VIN right its 58T12Y2338453. Can anyone give me any idea of how much this thing is worth or where I should look to figure out its value? (Someone offered me $800 but someone else told me its worth $5K !?!??!)
Thanks,
g
Hmmm... interesting question. First of all, unless I'm mistaken, the Cruising wagons were produced from 1977-1980. During that era, the first digit of the VIN indicated the year of the car. You might want to take another look at the VIN, but it shouldn't be a 5, which would indicate the car is a 1975 model, and therefore not a true CW.
Secondly, you describe it as being restorable which implied that it perhaps needs restoration which would greatly affect the value. If that's the case, I think you can safely disregard the $5000 esitmate.
Does it run? Is there rust? How's the interior? Post as many photos on this site as possible, and I'll bet you the guys and gals here will be able to evaluate it pretty well!

I'm a big fan of the Cruising Wagon, and depending on the condition, like any car, there can be a wide range in the value. According to one of the more recent magazines I've seen, the upper value for any Pinto in mint condition ranges up to just over $3000. However, as Dwayne said, there is a lot to consider about the car. Post the pictures as you get them and see what comes of it. If you're definitely looking to sell, this is the place to start. The folks here are pretty knowledgeable, and they are the ones who would have the most interest in the car you have to sell. When you post more info about the car, get the engine and transmission, odometer reading, a/c or not, that kind of stuff. It will help people get a better feel for the car. Good luck, and if you're close by, I might be interested myself.
I went and took a bunch of picture but I cannot figure out how to upload in the gallery....
To answer some questions: the 5 in the VIN can definitely be something different (I had a hard time reading it) but when I dig up the title, or look elsewhere on the car, I'll be sure.
There is rust. The lower doors have it, the pass. lower fender, and the floor where the rear passenger sides feet would be.
Does it run? Good question, I remember it turning over by hand a few years ago and its been under tarps since but right now I'm having trouble even opening the hood.
The interior, I think, is pretty nice. The dashpad has a crack, and the front seats are starting to come apart and the steering wheel doesn't look correct, but the back seats and linings are pretty nice. (When I get the pics up it will be easier to decide for yourselves).
FlyerPinto: good questions. I didn't see your post when I went out there but I'll get back to you. The engine I figured out from the VIN code before...but now I don't remember.

Here are the pics. Please take a look and tell me what you think its worth.

Note: The pictures of the rust near the shackle and the rear passenger floor show the rust but outside of that the floor seems otherwise very nice...my guess is someone left it with a passenger rear tire uninflated for it to have such local rust.

Judging from the front end, it's either a '77 or '78. The Cruising Wagon has its fans and that may well affect the value, but if it were mine and I were offered $800, I'd grab the money and run... unless of course, you're wanting a project of your own! Just my opinion. I'm sure others will weigh in with their thoughts.

Dwayne that's about what i was thinking. 800-1000 at most. there are some nice parts on it but the under-carriage looks like its toast. I'm sure with some work its restorable tho.
I'll try to get more pics of the undercarriage tomorrow. If someone patched where the rear passengers' feet are, and replaced that bracket for the front spoiler, I think what remains would be a solid looking undercarriage. (As far as the lower right drivers doorjam corner, that may be the toughest repair to do correctly.)
What about the parts included on the "Sport rallaye package" that are talked about here http://www.lovefords.org/78/pintobobcat/pwagon.htm (http://www.lovefords.org/78/pintobobcat/pwagon.htm)
Would any of these pieces up your estimates?
I'm thinking the 5 you saw in the beginning of the VIN is actually a Ford F (in the Ford script).

Only if you're considering parting the car out. If you are selling it as a complete car, it's unremarkable because the Sport Rallye Package was standard equipment on all Cruising Wagons.

I love those cruising wagons - this style in particular. However, I would give no more than 1K for it, possibly less.
The rust areas added up would be a LOT of work to restore and I bet the hidden cowl areas are rusted, too. There is no AC either.
Did I see rust holes int he rear end???? Surely not....
On the flip side, itt is pretty much complete, it does have the desirable porthole windows and rally package. Restored to at least a driver grade, this would surely turn some heads! I hope someone saves it....
Folks,
My interested customer came across a 63 Vette and is selling some of his stuff. Anyway, if anyone is near southeastern mass, check it out: http://southcoast.craigslist.org/cto/1708322115.html (http://southcoast.craigslist.org/cto/1708322115.html)
Guys,
I dropped the price to $700 on this. If anyone is still interested, let me know.
