Title: Well, if all goes as planned, the Pinto is about to become a project
Post by: russosborne on April 20, 2010, 09:14:53 PM
Ever since I found out that the Mustang II I bought is junk, I have been wanting to get another project car. Something I can just park in the garage, work on when I want to, and not have to worry about keeping it roadworthy.
I have been looking on Craig's List, in anticapation of getting our tax refund. Just to see what is out there. I had almost decided on getting that Pinto in the other post I made if it was still there when I had the cash.
Then I woke up. I have had to use our Taurus to haul parts in and on. Scratched it up pretty bad this last time. What I need to get is a truck. Not a project, but something that can be a daily driver. We need something to haul stuff anyway. And then I realise I already had the perfect project car in my driveway. The Pinto.

So the plan is that after I can find a truck in our budget, which isn't very much, I will get the II out of the garage (scrap, give away, whatever) and move the Pinto in.
Not sure totally what I will be doing. It won't be a restoration. And it won't be a race car. Something in between. I always wanted a ProStreet car, but am too old to be climbing over roll bars anymore. Plus I want this to end up being able to be a daily driver when it is done, at least for the summer months. And it being a hatchback, there is no way I am putting a fuel cell back there. I am already worried about moving the battery there and thinking of making some sort of box to mount it under the car. Not sure yet.

So I know I will be putting in subframe connectors. Either the 8 inch rear from the II or the one I have from a 67 Stang. Probably some sort of roll bar, maybe just a 4pointer. I have some custom ideas as well. Involving the II parts I have. :-) Engine I don't know yet. A 302 with a C4 would be cheap, and that may be the deciding factor. And I do have a small bellhousing for a C4 for a V8 from the II. But I have always loved the 351Clevelands. And I am seeing someone here selling headers for that. So I am not the only one to ever want to do this.

The body will need work. The underneath is pretty clean, but the quarters, doors, and hood all have rust holes. I always could leave them and make a sleeper. :-) But I don't think the exhaust will be quiet enough for that.

Once I get started I will start a thread in the Project section.
