:-\ I am considering buying a late-model V6 pinto tomorrow. I know nothing about the V6's though. Any experience here????
Are parts available?
Are they as reliable as the 4's?
Are the auto transmissions with V6's ok?
I have to decide tomorrow, so any info would be appreciated!
I have a V6 in my 78 I bought it new 31 years ago. replaced the timing gears about 60k, the original top nylon gear disenigrated.I replaced them with metal ones. No problems since. The trans on mine is a c4.It has shifting isssues, but has been sitting 18 years.Worst case it need a rebulid, but C4's are cheap and easy to rebuild. I would buy another V6.
i personally did not like the 2.8. i cannot say anything about reliabilaty. but i can say, there is much more out there for the 2.3 based engines. a v6 pinto should have had a c3, not a c4. double check your pan bolts. 13 is c3, 11 is c4. both my v6 rides were c3s. i wouldnt turn a v6 model down if it was the right price though.

I don't think all the V6's came with C3's, I am pretty sure my 75 parts car has a C4 in it along with the 8" rear. However my last 79 V6 parts car had the C3 in it and no 8". I think Ford made a change in one of the model years.
Hi, I just pulled a 2.8 out of my 78 tonight. It will be rebuilt and as far as I am aware of all the internal parts are still available for these motors. as for the tranny, this car came with a C4. They are a tough little transmission. (speaking about old late 60's transmissions. not sure about late 70's, however, I would guess that they will do the job nicely.
No problem with the V6, most came with the Cruise-O-matic (C4) transmission. Parts for the engine are available, Ford did put these into other cars. (some Broncos and Rangers) so hey were not Pinto exclusive. I actually just bought a 1976 2.8 runabout for the wife. I plan to pull the engine next year and give it a complete machine shop rebuild and then put it back in, with maybe a little horsepower increase. They do run hot though, so plan on insulating the floors better.
