Title: anybody remove the EGR on their 2.3 ?
Post by: steveshay on April 13, 2010, 08:29:41 AM
I am wanting to semi desmog my 2.3.  Any comments on removing the EGR?  What kind of plate did you use to cover the hole in the manifold?  Did you make a plate or buy one?

Or should I forget it,,, and leave the EGR as is?? :lost:

THANKS

If its working, I fail to see (also cant remember) where your going to gain anything !
If its not working, well that's another thing.
We took off dozens of them back in those days.

Cut a gasket out of any  "flat metal"
Just be sure its heavy enough so it doesn't flex.
If we didn't have anything heavy enough, we used anything (like an old tin can) as a gasket, and cut the bottom of the EGR valve "Flat"

Again, if its working, your not going to gain anything.  Just remember......  The motor "HAS TO BE VENTED"  Don't remove the PCV valve and / or hook-up

  Don't fix what aint broke   ? ? ? ? ? ?

I have the EGR removed on my 78's 2.3. The base of it was cracked where it mounts to the carb spacer and a new one locally was $129.99! :o

I have even been able to pass emissions without the valve on it, along with a few other tricks of coarse. Car runs just fine with out it.

I had to get a large brass plug from a local brass/copper fabrication store/supplier here to plug up the EGR tube hole on the exhaust manifold.

For the carb spacer where the EGR valve mounts, I bought a new EGR valve gasket and cut a piece of 1/4" aluminum sheet the same size as the EGR valve base, then drilled out holes for the mounting bolts and installed it with the same required torque for the EGR valve. No problems here!

I removed the EGR and just installed a 5/8 core plug in the hole. If you have the carb off, go ahead and remove the carb to manifold adapter. The bottom side is usually coked up bad from the EGR. I like to remove the bottom part and open up the bores a bit to help flow. JT

Thanks everyone for the input.  I found and ordered a new billet cap w/ gasket for the EGR on ebay for $12  shipped.   If anyone wants more info, let me know.
