These are one time use parts, meaning once they are crushed to a specific torque (140 ft/lbs) they cannot be reused. In special circumstances they can be reused, but extreme care must be used not to collapse the spacer any more than it already has been to ensure proper gear offset!
The most common time to replace this spacer is when replacing the pinion flange oil seal. The seal often leaks due to regular wear. This would be the seal located at the front of the differential housing.
The spacer measures about 1 3/8" on the smaller side, and a little over 1 1/2" on the wider side with an overall length of 2 1/8" before crushed. Use this info to verify the part the dealership pulls for you is the correct one!
These parts are not reproduced by anyone and only a handful of Ford Dealerships still have one or two in stock. Here is a list of the dealerships that still have the part available, some even with a discount because they want stuff off their shelves. I keep one around as a spare which I just ordered from Rick Ford Sales in Michigan, which was $5.72 for the part and $5.00 UPS Ground shipping. That's a good example of how cheap you can get it for. Some dealerships may want $35+ for just the part, so call around and see what you can find!

why couldn't a machine shop turn these out if we had the exact measurements to give then? maybe someone on here could mic this part and put it on line here for everyone. sounds good to me to help us all out. a friend of mine who has a michine shop an would be happy to do this . problem solved?

Actually, if I remember correctly, you picked up the one for me that I have right now from a dealership near you about a year ago. I think it cost you about the same as what I just bought this other one for ($5.72), but you got it for me to be sure it was the same part I was looking for.
That would be awesome pintokite! I will pick up the one I have at my parents in the back of my wagon full of parts and measure one out for you! I don't know how measure the ribbed spot, but I will do what I can.
