hi everybody, i have a 2000 (bored to 30 over) with the 4 spd trans. i also have a 4 barrel carb on it. my question is, is the stock fuel pump enough to handle the 4 barrel or do i need an electric pump to keep up with the preasure? reson for asking is that when parked in the garage an had running to do my breakin peroid it ran fine, and now that we finally got some nice weather, i took it out for a spin and had trouble keeping it running. also when it did run it would idle real high, and for some reason would not kick down and when it did kick down it wanted to die and did. would not start back up eihter right away, had to wait about 5-10 mins. start back up and idle real high until it seemed like it was running out of gas. had to do this 3 times til i got back to the garage. i just don't know what the trouble is. could it be the carb. ain't right or am i not running the right fuel pump to keep up with the carb? what is the normal fuel preasure suppose to be?
thanks for listening and any help would be greatly appreciated!
Most stock pumps run about 5-7 psi. Which carb are you running? The high idle and dying could be a vacuum or mixture problem. My 2000 with a spearco intake and 6299 holley needed a 5 jet size increase to smooth out. I've had no problems with the stock fuel pump. Like to hear more. JT
it is a carter, not sure of the number(s). i will try to get some off of it if i can fined them(i tried before but could not fined any). where would the vacuum problem be, i have all new lines & hoses. i pulled one at a time off and they did make a difference in the way it ran (not very well i might add) some what smoothed out when hooked back up. but it did not help. that would tell me that they are working (right)?
thanks glen
Got any carb cleaner to spray around the bottom of the carb while its running to make sure its still sealed up good to the intake? if the carbs not sealed to the intake good it'll do the same thing as a vac leak. Most carter carbs are 550-750 cfm if i remember correctly its just a edlebrock with a different name on it.
haven't had a chance to do that yet, but the guy at our local napa told me to do that. 550 & up seems like a little to much to me. i always thouht that 350-390 was plenty. may have to get a new carb.
thanks again
550cfm is way to much carb, I ran a 390 Holley on my 2.0, when I drag raced it I turned it 9000 rpm on the stock pump. Only used the electric pump for the nitrous. :) :fastcar:
that's what i thought. haven't yet had a chance to check it out yet. where might i get a carb that will set side ways, so ti is not hitting the valve cover? but anyway if anyone is interested, i have a nos edlebrock intake with two rebuilt one barrel carbs. on it w/air cleaners. i am not going to use it, seems to hard to hook up to me. i am going to offer it to anyone that has a intake w/a 4 barrel carb. on it and is ready to put on car and run, for trade. i was hoping that i could get this probem worked out so i could make carlisle this year!
thanks again!!
i would still use the help maybe with the one i have!!
