Title: rack & pinion question
Post by: dholvrsn on March 26, 2010, 06:15:20 PM
Omaha has thawed out and Wee Beastie and I are coming out of hibernation.

Anyway, the rack & pinion is leaking. Should I replace the seals or the whole thing? It's a '79 wagon with 2.3 (from a XR4Ti) and power-steering.

rebuilt racks are cheap.   i think mine ran under 2 bills and comes with new inner tie rods, rubber boots and all the seals.   plus its a quick r and r.   measure your old arm lengths before you pull the tie rods and you should be able to reassemble with a pretty close alignment.     it only affects toe so as long as its the same on both sides and reasonably close you will still go straight down the road

From everything Ive read the MII rack is stronger & bolts right in. Just watch the bolt hole spacing since a lot of rebuilts are newer models & will require the offset bushings to bolt up.

I am doing the same thing on my 1978 cursing wagon with the same xr4ti motor I would replace the hole thing
