Well i have a 1978 mercury bobcat 2.3 im trying to get the original engine running for now while i gather the rest of the parts i need for my 2.3t swap. Well i ran into a snag today the bottom end is out of a 90 ranger so i have to put a electric fuel pump on it i did that but now it still wont run and still wont try to start . It has fuel and it has spark which is why im so sure its timing. But since the timing cover has been removed i just did the ole look through the spark plug hole to get #1 at TDC then set the cam like i would my 2.3t Use a string to align the mark on the cam gear with the aux gear spun the motor over 4 times after i set that and the marks lined right back up. Then i set the dizzy to the number one plug wire and put the cap back on. Got inside the car tryed to start it and turns over fine but wont start.
Any ideas on wat i might have did wrong or another way i can set the timing maybe oh and the firing order is set for 1342.
grab a front cover from a current 2.3 that is plastic with the marks on it. pull the accessory belt and trim the right side of the cover to get it installed. i yanked the acc tensioner pulley to get it all to clear you can hang it there temp with the single bolt on the timing tensioner and get the bottom aligned with the lowers tab on the cover there is a 2nd hole there u can use. then set your timing and dispose the thing. i bet you are just way late which will be almost impossible to start. turn the dizzy a quarter inch counterclockwise (looking at the vac spout end) and try again.
OhSix'
well i turned the dizzy a 1/4 inch counter clockwise and nothing still wont start guess im gunna have to go find a timing cover for it....
