Title: bump steer spindle adapters
Post by: duane on March 26, 2010, 10:49:12 AM
Hi, I found your forum and am hoping you Pinto experts can shed some light on my delema.
Is there a kit, or some trick to adapt 1972 Pinto spindles to use 1/2 inch rod ends for my bump steer alingment problem?
I do know drilling out the taper is an option. Has anyone done this? Or is it better left to a machine shop?
Will 73 and later Pinto or Mustang II spindles work in place of the 72's ?
Thanks in advance

Racer walsh has offset bushings for the rack & pinion to correct geometry problems, check with any stock car supplier for adapters to convert tie rod ends- this is a common part

From what I remember reading, the 71-72 bump steer adjustment was done by shiming the rack up and down.  Unbolt the rack's four mounting bolts and slide shims under the rack bushing/mount until the bump steer is reduced (may need longer bolts).  I never tried this but suspect it is probably more difficult than the literature said.

The 73 spindle may allow you to use the rod end kits.  It is the same height as the 71-72 spindle but has a larger tie rod end taper hole (based on the nut size).  Reaming out the 72 spindle steering arm may be easier than locating 73 spindles.  Note that the tie rods on the 71-72 are smaller than the 73 and up, so verify the rod end thread size before buying.

The 74 and up spindles will not fit without major fabrication.

WHY? It's a big waist of time for the street. Unless your building a racer, forget it. Tires are the one most important thing you can do for a good driveing Pinto. The right tire will make a Pinto perform better than most drivers can cope with. Been there/done that.
