Hi,
I have a replica of a 1953 MG TD. It is built on a 1978 ford pinto chassis and 2.3 lima engine. I have a problem which I believe is electrical. While cranking the ignition the car will fire up. If I keep cranking, It will continue to run. The second I stop cranking the car shuts off immediately.
I cannot figure out the issue. I have replaced the ballast resistor, ignition module, starter coil, and the starter for good measure. I tried to start it again and same thing. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
Geoff
Check the ignition switch. The system is sending 12 volts thru the solenoid to the starter and the coil on start up but when you let switch go to the run position, the 12 stops going to the coil. I had this same problem with the 73 and it turned out to be the ignition switch.
"Pinto's are Cool!"
X2 on ignition switch.
If this has the 1978 Duraspark II ignition system, then the module gets two separate power signals - one during cranking and another from RUN.
If you have an ammeter, you should see about 3A of current start to flow when you turn the key to RUN. This would be the coil and module drawing power.
With engine off, key in RUN, measure for 12V at the Duraspark box (white with blue stripe) and 6-12V at the coil + terminal.
(This assumes the DS2 box)...
Thanks a lot guys! I will replace it when I get home today and give it a try!
Replacing my starter solenoid in my Wagon corrected that same problem!
if you are using the pinto column its more than likely the actuator rod on the column... its out of adjustment..... loosen the screws on the ijnition switch and slide it either up or down the column until you can start it normally.... that fix is a free one.....
I might as well just replace it for only $15. But I will also check the placement of the actuator rod. Thanks everyone for the great advice!
