Title: That Darn Brake Warning Light!
Post by: blupinto on March 20, 2010, 11:03:36 PM
Issues, issues, issues...

Today, while driving my '73 wagon locally I was unable to put her shifter into second gear (like there's  a barrier or something). I pulled over, put her in first, then second again and this time the shifter went in. However, now the brake warning light has faint illumination... but only when the transmission's engaged. When it's in neutral, there is no illumination.  I realize I have a couple issues here. Could someone please shed some light on them? BTW, (hopefully) before the Knott's trip the clutch will be replaced, as well as some other incidentals.  Thank you to whoever can help me here. :D

Becky, how in the world do you dream up these kind of problems??!!  ??? :amazed: Sounds like some of the cars I get assigned to work on: " When I turn on the right signal the left tire goes flat."
The shifter has nothing to do with the brake light!!
Lets see, the wiring for the brake light runs along the trans tunnel, but the shift linkage is all internal.
So you're saying that with the clutch pushed down and the shifter in neutral, the light is out. Then when you push the shifter up into first the light comes on. Or is it when you let the clutch out? If that's the case I suspect the wire for the e-brake is rubbing on the clutch cable or the fork, causing it to ground.
Arrrggg!!! And people wonder why I have no hair!!!  :afro: :embarassed:

Yeah... only I would have problems like these. Like I said, the brake warning light is faintly illuminated... not fully illuminated like when I start the car. Hey Jim! Come out here and work on her for me!  lol.
