hey everybody, I decided to go with the 302 in my wagon, mainly because i have the motor and trans already, but i have a few questions. first off is what i have, its a 302 and t-5 from an 84 gt convertable. now my car is a 73 2.0 4 speed. my questions are as follows. 1. will i need to shorten my driveshaft, or is there another car i could get one from that would fit. ( i am planning on an 8 inch swap later on after i blow the little 6 and whatever it is up). 2 will the serpentine belt system work in the the pinto or and i gonna have to go hunting for parts to switch to a v-belt. 3. my understanding is you need an oil pan from a 302 mustang 2, or can you just modify a regular front sump pan. and 4. what kind of motor mounts should i use, i was thinking of using the rubber mounts from the 302 and fabricating some frame mounts from quarter inch plate and lastley, is there enough room under the pinto chasis to put some flowmasters under there ( i have them already ( was gonna put on my nova, but i should it) thanks a bunch , i just want to collect as much information about this as possible before i dive into this to minimize suprises so any helpful websites would be nice to, thanks again, chris
All great questions. I think Jeff or ? was going to put together a FAQ for V8 swap's I dont know if they have started but I'll check.
on mine as far as the driveshaft I just changed the yoke and it fit mine. I have a 351 auto in my 71 just had to beat the fenders down and the firewall in. I had the big bell housing.
As far as mine goes, all of my 302 parts are from a 78 mustang II. Its still in the works but, yes you do have to change the oil pan to a mustangII pan. Had to do it on mine.
my pan is from a crown vic police car, 351, or you can also use a truck pan, but you may need to modify it to fit with a BFH ;D I will try to get together a V8 FAQ post as soon as posible.
from what i remember the 302 and 351 windsor use different oil pans. A stock front sump can be modified to work relitively easily.

I have compared the 2 and it would seem that the pans will bolt up (have both in the garage). you just need the oil pickup tube to match the pan. The difference in pan should be related to the application that the engine is used(truck, fox body, other car) The biggest difference in the blocks is the deck height and width at the top. The bottom end of the engine should be similar.

That is a brief idea on what i had to do to fit the 302 oil pan on the 351. I was incorrect. It fit as far as the shape was concerned, but the area at the crank was too small on the pan and the carier for the crankshaft was too tall for the pan. I may need to modify it a little more to fit into the car, but it is close to the final shape. Next weekend, I will attempt to install it using MII motormounts. The drive shaft does not need to be modified to work and will help with the final placement of the engine. The biggest issue will be the radiator since the fox mustang GT is too wide for the pinto rails.

Here is what I did with my oil pan. I am using a 302 with a c4 trans. This pan is sized to a stock crank using stock connecting rods. As I am at ground zero and in the process of fitting up my exhaust carry out pipes I find that I did not need to cut so much forward by about 2 inches. But I did want to sit absolutly as low as I could go to get back as far as I could go without beating the crap out of my car with a hammer. Although a little tapping in some key places is required. The oilpan is the key. This is my opinion.
High_Horse...where did you get that pan? I'm building a 302 for my 71 and dont really want to find/use a MII pan. Thanks...
I was not happy. I explored all avenues. I have an oilpan builder not 5 miles from me. I flipped the block put in the crank and a connecting rod and took measurements. This is what I got. And like i said, if I was to do it again I would not cut so far forward by about 2 inches. The pan builder said that windage would not be a problem. Another did. Any windage experts out there??? I will be taking it back before it goes into operation to have a set of cylindical extensions put on either side of the sump to increase oil capacity and cooling capabilities. I allowed 1/2 inch below the connecting rod stud for clearence. And the way it sits in the car(with the rear of the car up a bit I should have forward flow.
have the guy build a sh*t load of them, sell them to the pinto and mustang II guys. You'd do good i bet!
IN MY SWAP, I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE IS NOT MUCH ROOM TO FIT A 351 UNDER THE HOOD OF A PINTO RUNABOUT. I HAVE ORDERED A SET OF HEADERS OFF A 98 FORD EXPLORER WITH A 302. I WILL RUN THEM BACKWARDS TO ALLOW PROPER CLEARANCES. HAS ANY ONE ELSE TRIED THESE? FOR VISUAL REFERENCE I HAVE ATTACHED A PICTURE

Installed the headers last night and there was no fender beating involved. I can even fit my entire hand under the passenger side with no problem. I will post pictures this weekend. There will be some power loss due to all of the exhaust going into one tube, but it should not be a problem for now. I will modify it for tubular headers some day.
please post a picture of your exhaust manifold set up, i'd like to see it. At some point i'd like to modify a set of 5 liter aftermarket shorty headers (modify headers and possibly steering shaft) to fit on the '74& up Pinto....my hooker headers are a pain in the a$$ and they leak due to all the slip fittings.
go to http://mysite.verizon.net/res0pv34/ tomorrow night after 10 pm. I should have it updated by then. I am hoping to start the car tomorrow for the first time.
as requested, here are the pics of teh explorer headers installed on the car

Hope that helps. We spent all weekend getting it ready to start and it is fighting us. Hopefully we will get it running tomorrow night. Wish us luck
looks good, i was thinking you were putting them on the proper way....maybe you had found a set of manifolds that would work.....wishfull thinking i guess!

I tried that, if they were put in the proper way, the driver side would drop down on to the steering box and that is an issue in itself. I would like a true set of headers that would not colllect like these do, however, they will get the job done for now.
These are the exhaust manifolds I am using. As I am only trying to achieve a clean and effective setup, I am wittling thig down to a minimum. These manifolds are the back exit type(stock something) but allowed me to scoot below with the carry out pipes avoiding contact with the starter and dipstick tube on the right side and the steering shaft on the left.
those look like mustang ii headers. I saw some on ebay last week
They also put me in the mind of the ones that were on my 67 comet with a 289.
Those are 289 manifolds. The MII piecescare the same except the pass. side. It has a cast in "downpipe" to let you get at the bolts without cursing too much.
