Title: factory tach
Post by: 72pair on March 13, 2010, 09:07:54 PM
Anyone have any insight into factory tach problems? My 80 bobcat tach just bounces between 0-1500rpm. I haven't attempted removing the cluster due to the known fragile nature of these housings. Is there a common problem and does someone repair them? Any help? Thanks, JT

Mine is acting up as well.  It bounces between the actual rpm and about 500 rpm higher.  I think I am going to swap it for another that I have to see if it is the tach or something else.  I had to repair my engine harness already so I hope there are not new issues there.  I am lucky though that my housing is nice and solid.  Have you checked your wiring just in case?

mine does the same thing but when i hook to the wire from the tach at the back of the cluster to a remote tach it works perfectly. so my tach section on the gauge cluster is bad. i need a new one or just to remove the cluster and mount a speedo and tach behind the Original cover section from the gauges.

I swapped mine out today with a different one and my problem went away.  I took one apart as well.  In my opinion, it will take someone with some knowledge on them to repair them.  You may be better off replacing it with a known good unit.
