I'm thinking of swapping a 2.3T out of a turbocoupe into a 74+ pinto. I wanna do it somewhere along the lines of what Joe Morgan did with his, as far as setup goes. What do you estimate the cost to be, say if I wanted to run low 11s/high 10s consistently?
Hey,
I am planning the exact same thing. I posted a couple of pics of my '74.
I am going to be going in slow. I am working on getting a nice running and driving turbo coupe and getting the swap done then looking into go fast goodies and mods.
I know I have been looking at modifications and what not and they do add up pretty quick.
I could see myself dropping an easy 5k-10k into this toy. Numbers could easily go higher pending what you want in the end.
working on a couple of custom stickers also :) to mess with the honda kids.
Well, I'm pretty sure I could hit consistent 10s with less than 5 grand. Stock short-block, T3/T4 turbo, big FMIC, 20+ lbs. of boost... 8)
I also want a nice trans, and a good rear-end setup. C4, 3500 stall, transpak...Then a 8" rear-end, spooled with 3.73-4.11 gears, DOT slicks, and a nice suspension to handle some hard launches.
FYI, Its not as easy to run 10's as it would apear from the Hot Rod artical. I know Joe ran a S*&^$T load of NOS in that car and burned pistons about every other run. He also ran the car about every weekend and got real good at launching with real good 60ft times.

I can't comment on the rest but that car was at the street legal drags, Norton AFB drags, the Rialto Drags, LACR, Carlsbad, and I'm sure I missed a few. I could swear in the early days, before the 10's, I seen him drive it to LACR (about 50-60 miles) and change the rear tires to race. I will admit we chuckled a bit.

I know a guy who knows Joe,(and got a little help from him) and I think he said the pinto would run deep 11s without spray, high 10s with it.
Remember, he's doing all of this on a stock shortblock...He's bound to break something eventually.
