Title: Updating my 77 Road Racer with a 2006 Duratec 2.3
Post by: wingman72 on March 10, 2010, 10:47:03 AM
Installed a 71-72 Flaming river rack, had to notch the crossmember for the steering shaft.  Bought a ton of goodies from Burton Power in the UK.  Pace dry sump kit including aluminum pan, pump, fittings belt etc. Jenvey Fuel Injection intake with air horns.  Omex fuel/ignition management kit(computer, sensors, wiring harness etc).  Bellhousing for Rocket gearbox( I run a Quaiffe 4-spd) with hydraulic clutch throwout.  Retroford water rail to get the water from the back of the head to the front of the engine.  And from the states  Eagle H beam rods, Supertech 12.5/1 Pistons, Black nitride valves and double springs with Titanium retainers.  Still haven't picked out the cams etc. yet.  Next step will be making engine mounts before tear down for engine machining.  I can't say enough about the folks at DB Electrical, alternators and starters(new) with no core charge for 1/3 rd of the retail store prices.  Anyhow I'll Try to get some pics posted as soon as I have more time.

The shipping/Duty is the real expense.  The dry sump kit is 1050pounds, roughly $1600.00, but esslinger wants $2100.00 for the same set up but a crappy steel pan.  Bellhousing ended up @about$600 with duty/shipping, but a beautiful piece.  Intake/Engine management ran about $2500.00.  Rods, Pistons w/rings, valvetrain w/keepers $1500.00.  I just have to sell all the stock parts, I have the injection, wiring harness etc that came w/the motor.
I blew my motor@ MAM Raceway on lap four last year.  This conversion is going to cost about $3000.00 more than building another cast Iron 2300.  But the weight savings, and Horsepower gain will be worth it.

Kyle ,
Congrats on the conversion.. But Will SCCA allow that motor in the GT3 class ? It sounds like you're about to go SPU..

Questions:

With the dry sump I assume this takes care of the oil pan clearence probblem?

Can you get a bellhousing for a T5 ?

whats the advantage to that injection over a TB set up?

The 2.3 Duratec Is allowed in GT-3, min weight goes up from 2080 to 2140 I believe(I am a National Scrutineer, line chief for GT-2 while the Runoffs were in Topeka).  Yes this eliminated the clearance problems as far as the pan to crossmember, the steering rack still had to be lowered.  I believe they do offer a bellhousing to a T-5, go to BurtonPower.com and look it up, they've got a lot of stuff for the duratec.  Chose the Injection over TB's to have more consisten power without having to constantly rejet for atmospheric conditions.  I was running webers on my old motor.

I can't figure out how to post pics??
