Title: V8 swap oil pan
Post by: IWANTAPINTO on February 21, 2010, 06:51:59 PM
I am looking for the correct oil pan for the 302 I am putting in my 1978 Pinto Runabout. I have found front sump oil pans on various sites, but they dont look like they are shallow enough in the rear to allow the engine to sit low enough in the compartment. Any web links, part numbers or pictures of exactly what I need to look for would be immensely helpful, Thanks in advance.

you need a pan for a mustang II, the parts stores list a regular 302 pan for the mII but it won't fit the mII or the Pinto!!
look on e-bay or check out a milodon or a summit racing front sump low profile

all the front sump pans i found wouldnt work, with out buying the one jimmys talking about. i took a front sump and made one that would work. but it would be easier to buy the one jimmy is talking about.

Found Ford pans on the Milodon site

http://www.milodon.com/oil-pans/street-oil-pans-ford73.asp (http://www.milodon.com/oil-pans/street-oil-pans-ford73.asp)

The first pan on the page seems like it might be the one I am looking for, is that it?

that would be the one. you also need the pick up tube that goes with it. summit sells the same pan under the summit brand for less bucks ;D

Yeah I just found that too. I am going to have to try and track down that summit pan. The engine is fast approaching what I paid for the car.

I found this pan on another site

http://www.cfrperformance.com/1965_87_FORD_SMALL_BLOCK_DRAG_RACING_OIL_PAN_p/hz-7474-pbk.htm (http://www.cfrperformance.com/1965_87_FORD_SMALL_BLOCK_DRAG_RACING_OIL_PAN_p/hz-7474-pbk.htm)

It looks pretty close and is about $150 cheaper. It looks like the shallow part of the pan may be a little bit deeper than the Milodon, any thoughts?

The biggest area of concern is right behind the sump (right above the "R" in that pic). On the mII pan there is a half moon concaved area that provides about an extra 1" of clearance over the rack. For my swap headers to fit I had to have that extra bit of clearance. I tried a regular 302 pan and it was no-go. It would be nice if you could get a measurement of that area and call or e-mail to get a comparison. I can't tell you 100% that the Milodon will work, I've just read other posts about it. Anyone out there using one?

OK, more info! It wasn't a summit pan, it was on e-bay. Another member found it and was going to try it on his swap but he dropped out of sight so I don't know if it worked or not. Here is the item #  It is an e-bay store.  330234394768. $79.00

I'm trying to put a 302 in a 1977 pinto cruising wagon. I have read several blogs on this and these are the parts I have acquired. I have the motor mount frame brackets for a mustang 2 and the manifolds for a v8 mustang 2.  I need the correct oil pan and starter. Is the ones that are for sale now a correct replacement.

Get a mini high torque starter.

Manifolds that work
