Title: '79 Wagon interior upgrade
Post by: Pintopower on February 18, 2010, 12:53:26 AM
I have spent a week re doing the complete wiring, climate control and interior of Christine. I sanded and reshot the entire inside of the car. The silver trim was put back along with the dash wood trim piece. All inside lights are now LED and there is also a new Sony 930 radio with 7 speakers (including the underdash speaker), a sub and two amps. No non-factory wiring is visible even with the radio out of the dash. An auxilary fuse box was installed to eliminate any strain on the factory wiring. I also added dynamat everywhere! The A/C duct work was rebuilt and the fittings all trimmed and padded with much better foam strips. The A/C easily blows twice the CFM now as prior to the work. Since I finished my last four pintos, I realized that the car I restored first (13 years ago) was no longer done to my standards of today, not to mention all the HORRIBLE work that the mechanics had done to her. Taking what I learned on my fleet, I have turned my first car back into my flagship. This is merely the beginning of the interior work. I have a surprise for the Pinto community... something will be available for the fist time ever in all newly re-poped condition. Christine will be getting the first of the set (I just hope it will be done for the show)! This will be unveiled at Fabulous Fords.

Wow. I can't WAIT until I get to that point. Beautiful work. I know what it's like to have that "mess". Really great job.

Pintopower, where did you get your center console?
Thanks, Robert

The center console is out of a mustang II. The standard pinto console was modified so that the console would not have to be. Otherwise the console has to be cut and that ruins it.

Would you be able to give me some detaials on how you cut the little console to fit the mustang II console in?
Thanks, Tink

I don't know if he cut the small e-brake cover to fit under the Mustang II console or if he removed it. I removed the original cover on my e-brake handle and installed the MII console afterwards.

Very sleek,  I like the look of the work.  I was looking for pics of 79-80 dashes and your pics were just what i needed to see.  thanks and looks good.   so what is the secret,  did we miss it yet?

cheers

rctinker, sorry I didn't see your post!

I removed the parking brake cover since it is no longer needed. Then I cut out the coin tray from the stock console so that the two could coexist. This eliminates ruining the Mustang II console buy cutting off the front. It works great for me and adds a bit of style.

This is the secret, HA! I just didn't look at this post! I will take some closeups!

I wish I would have done my console like yours so I didn't have to chop the front of mine off. Maybe some day I can obtain another console and do it RIGHT. :)

I am hoping that the repop those. I think there is a pretty good market for them, in Mustang IIs and Pintos. There is another way to install it:

Delete the center console like I did on my 80. It now has a console but I need to take a picture of it. This is a problem with AC cars and rally pack cars. But, for those that are not, it is an option.

I considered removing my under dash console on my 78 too, but I use it to much to do that. The Mustang II doesn't have a console, which is why it's so long.

I just wanted it gone for the looks. I think the console-less dash look very clean and pure. But yes, the console is so useful.

If my 78 wern't my daily driver and it were a show car, I would remove the stock console, but I always have something in there. :P

Also, to those who might want to put the MII console in their Pinto, if you decide to remove the center cubby, there's always the compartment in the arm rest to put stuff in, so you don't loose ALL of your storage space.

Yes, the absence of the center console makes the dash/floor interface SUPER clean. I really like the looks of it.

Yeah, but only early cars had that option so therefore I decided to do that to my CW. Aside from chopping the brackets on the tunnel and making a brace for the dash, there were no troubles in doing so.

Remember what size of foam that you used to fix your AC ducts? I'm going to have to do that on my notorious turbo with an AC project. It blows 45-50 degree air, but not much of it right now.

Of course, it's after I fix my other garage door that's not working and take care of the racoon infesting my awning.  :cheesy_n:

Since I'm at it, how thick was the DynaMatt? Thanks!

Took my dash apart and put it back together yesterday and today and fixed a lot of leaks with 1/8x3/8" and 1/4x3/4" foam. It does blow a lot more air through now. So your post was very helpful. If just a little too much work.

Sorry about the delay! That was actually not dynamat. It was 3/32" thick asphalt window flashing. It transformed the inside of the car. And it was CHEAP! I am glad that your A/C blows better now. I was amazed to find the giant gap in my center duct.

Alberto, looking at this luscious blue interior... I could just get lost in it. I love it! lol. Ruby RedHot is a console-free car. I don't think she ever came with one. There's no obvious "trauma" in that area's carpet.

I really like the console delete cars.
