Title: 73 alternator wiring
Post by: dave1987 on February 01, 2010, 09:36:38 AM
Need a diagram for the 73 pinto alternator wire harness. The wagon has a new battery, voltage regulator and alternator but it won't charge.

Actually, i think a more informational thing to post would be what color wires connect to what on the alternator. White with black stripe, is that the stator wire? Which is the field wire? Red with Blue stripe? Does the alternator need to be grounded via a wire?

Normally, the ends of the wires from the harness will only attach to the correct position on the alternator, unless of course some one has removed the stock parts and replaced them with something else.  There is also a piece called a "fuse link" that is a part of the wire that goes to between the alternator and the starter relay. If the fuse link is bad, no 12v will get to the alternator and it won't charge. Just remove the wire from the alternator, turn on the ignition switch and test the end you removed with a grounded test light and if you don't get a light, then chances are the fuse link is blown. If it is blown, replace it with a new one by soldering a new unit into the wire. Hope this helps!

I have the original harness, but one of the wires (white with black stripe) had the connector end tear off, so I crimped a new connector onto it. I can't remember which connector the orange capped wire goes to though. Just knowing that would tell me which one the new connector wire goes to. I just can't remember if the orange is the stator or the field wire.

The white with black stripe wire goes from the alternator stator to the regulator "S" terminal.  The orange with lt. blue stripe wire goes from the alternator field to the regulator "F" termianl.  The black with orange stripe wire from the alternator positive output gets spliced into yellow wires and then goes to the: regulator "A" terminal (with noise suppression capacitor), starter solenoid battery terminal via fuse link, ignition switch, headlight switch, and fuse panel.  The lt. green with red stripe wire goes from the regulator "I" terminal (via a diode) to the: dash warning light, ignition switch via a resistance wire.  The alternator case bolted to the engine brackets provides the ground.  The diode described above in the regulator "I" circuit does not show up in some other year diagrams and may be a typo on my 73 diagram.  Have fun.
