I'm trying to hook everything up on my motor and we ran into these 2 things that we are not sure of!
This first thing is an electrical wire that is comeing off the alternator. The alternator is off of the 74 motor. What does the wire that has a red arrow pointing at it go to? I can't find anything on the car itself that would hook to. Does it hook to something on the 74 motor?

The next thing is on the 77 motor. It is next to the carb and there is a wire coming out of the top! What is it and what does it do?

Kimmy, in picture #1 I believe that connects to a plug that has a wire going to the automatic choke. The wire is yellow, right? The piece with the arrow is the male end. The female is on the carb auto. choke. Anyway, that's according to my '74.
Picture #2 I don't know. Do you remember if the wire was red before it was painted? On mine this thingy (if it's the same thing) is mounted on (or in) the engine a little ways behind the carb. Mine goes to a wire bundle at the firewall and I suspect it might be a sending unit of some sort (maybe for oil pressure or overheating). Does the wire have an "L"-shaped end where it plugs into the engine?

Well hopefully you are right about the auto choke thing! All I would need to do is find the wire that went from choke to that wire in pic!!! :D
I'm not sure what color that wire was, I will go clean it off tomorrow and see. The wire has a straight metal male end of a conector on it, looks to have been pulled out of it's housing maybe. It isn't really on the carb, just on a bracket right by it!
The first wire does indeed go to the choke. It assists in heating up the choke coil so it opens up faster.
The second one is probably some sort of idle compensator maybe for the AC? It is not needed. Take the bracket off and throw it away if you want.
The female part that is attached to the choke will be bigger than the male part- the male, um, inserts into the female (imagine that... ::) :embarassed: :amazed: )
Thanks you guys!! Now I just need to figure out what we did with the wire that connects the two together!!!! (For the choke)!! LOL Should have it somewhere! LOL I know the 77 CW is missing hers too, so I can't go rob from her! LOL I will find it!
That is good to know I don't need that other thing. I will just leave it but tape up the wire for now!!
Thanks again. That is what I love about this place. Doesn't take long to learn something!! ;D
So there's no wire coming from the choke?
There is a place (male) to hook a wire, but the wire is not there! The wire may be on the 74 motor. I'm not sure. When I glanced at it's choke, it looked more like a water operated one. Not sure if a wire hooks to it or not. I will have to look closer tomorrow!
I love cable modem! lol. Can you see the two ends ok?
Yes thanks!! Can you go take a pic of what how the other end goes into the choke?
OK. Give me a few min. ;D

Ok, that will give me an idea of what I am looking for tomorrow! LOL
How's this?
...Or this?

How's this?
That is great! It showed me that the 74 electic choke is different then the 77! LOL Mine hooks into the front of the choke area, not the side and it has a big female clip (I haven't seen it just know it does because of how the male looks). I guess I will have to find the wire that went to the 74 and the wire that went to the 77 and make my 7477 wire!! LOL
THanks for the pics!!! It told me a lot!!!
I take it the carb is from the '74... the '77 engine may need it's own '77 carb.

No, the carb is the one that was on the 77, still on the 77. The alternator is off of the 74! I would think I could make my own wire out of the 74 and 77 wires. That way it would plug into th 74 alternator but still plug into the choke!
The male end you had in your hand won't fit in the female? Or was the wire pulled out of the female, so both are mated (the plastic plug-ins) but there's no wire from F end? Darn! I wish I was there! lol.
Ok, went out and took pics! Which was good because I found the wire I need for the choke!
First pic is the auto choke I have and where the wire plugs into it.

This is a pic of the wire on my 74 choke, which will hook into the wire on the alternator we used on the 77 which is a 74 alternator. Obviously this wire goes directly into the choke and will not just plug into the above choke!

Here is a pic of the wire (I just found LOL) plugged into my current 77 choke. You can see the grey end of it will not fit onto the 74's female plug. I will most likely cut this and splice the 74's plug onto it! THat way all will hook up nicely!

Yah, I don't think that'll work! lol. The very first pic looked like the male (alternator) end of the one I have. I must not have seen it right...
Never mind. I saw it right... you just switched carburetors! lol. I see the dilemma now... 8)

LOL, The carb we are planning on using is the one on the 77 motor we are using. I don't know why hubby wants to use the alternator off of the 74, but that is what started the problem! LOL That and I didn't even know what that extra wire was coming off of it! LOL Now that I know and I found the wire that goes to the choke on the 77, I will be able to remedy the problem easily!!
Thanks for the help!!!
You are very welcome. I'm glad I could help! ;D
