Brad, you beat me to the punch! lol. :reek: ;D

Bad gas... as in inferior gas or wrong grade of gas or old dirty gas? I'm a veteran at this so it's easy for me to say remove the tank and its bad gas.

drove my 72 stocker today for the first time and on the freeway the car was sputtering in a small but noticable way. every one and a while I would hear what I thought was a backfire through the exhaust ( not the carb ). Low on power etc. I have a new carb on the way which will fixt some of the tuning issues but this is what I dont know.
1) there was about 1/8 tank of gas in it when I got it ( dont know how long the gas was sitting). I put another 5 gal of fresh gas in it but what I dont know is if I mix bad gas with good gas will it all be bad gas. 2) If there is water in the gas, would this cause the issues.?

I'm no expert but I think it could account for it. Condensaton, lacquer, etc. isn't meant to go through the carburetor.

Brad, did you get that yellow '72 in Mission Viejo? If not, what stocker are we talking about?

Brad ,
If you think a stocker runs bad on flat gas, try a 10:1 motor with Dual Sidedrafts. It's beyond belief! Also the Ethanol additive in the gas absorbs lots of Moisture . Compounding the issue I'm Sure!

OK, changed out the gas: Same issue ( lets try a new carb now).

Brad, how are the points and condensor?  When condensors go out they usually do some wierd things.  Just a thought.....

So far I have received bad gas a couple times with my 67 Mustang.  Both were from a return trip from Hot August Nights and both were from Eugene Oregon.  After filling up, the car drove home just fine, about 110 miles.  However days later I went to start the car and the engine would sputter, miss, backfire, and die.  It was not driveable as the car would barely idle.  It was wierd.  The first time this happened I thought it was the carb.  So I rebuilt the carb thinking the power valve went out.  Nothing changed.  I swapped the carb and nothing changed.  I checked the ignition system buy swapping parts - no dice.  Finally one of my friends at the auto parts store said to drain the tank and fill it with fresh gas.  That did the trick however the plugs were so fouled with me playing with it that it ran pretty rough but at least it ran.  I just replaced the plugs and the car ran perfect again.  Two years later the same thing happened.  I came home, after filling up in Eugene, eveything was fine and the next day the car started running like crap.  I drained the tank first this time and all my problems went away.  I no longer get fuel in Eugene.

Good luck Brad

Interesting thing about the condenser. Today when I was playing with the distributor I noticed that there was a small arch ( a little snap and a pinpoint of electricity ) emanating from the screw that holds the exterior wire from the condenser to the body of the distributor. I didn't think much about it because im not sure why this is happening. Anyone want to take a guess?
