Title: Ignition wire
Post by: pintowagon77 on January 23, 2010, 11:26:18 PM
Just making sure: If i wanter to hook something up to go on when I turn the key what wire should i find? I have a fuel pump, electric fan i would like to wire right. Also any one know what wire runs the lights for the radio? There is a two plug connector with one black and two yellow wires, is that it?

I tapped into the wire  that runs to the hot side of the coil to turn on the relay that powers my electric fuel pump.

The following is based on a 77 EVTM and personal opinions.  Yellow with out stripes is used mainly for always hot circuits (not switch controlled).  The radio light is fed by a light blue wire with a red stripe which is controlled by the head light switch.  Electric fan and fuel pump are usually heavy loads and probably should be fed with their own fuses (new inline fuses) via intermediate relays from say the starter solenoid battery terminal.  You probably want these circuits energized while in run and sart (especially the fuel pump).  To power the relay coils, I would use the red with yellow hash marks wires that feed: dash warning lights, carb solenoid, and seat belt buzzer.  This is the same node as the ignition coil's red with light green stripe wire but it is protected by the #6 fuse.  In these relay coil circuits, you need to add your control device, i.e. toggle switch, thermostat.

For the fuel pump circuit see this thread for good safety tips.

Thanks a bunch! I found the other half of the radio plug in that has a blue with red and a black wire, think this was clipped from a radio. I just need to hook my guage lights in to the blue with red and plug it in.
