Title: Windows fog up in the rain
Post by: pintoguy76 on January 23, 2010, 08:40:46 PM
All 3 of my pintos (well maybe just the two, I don't remember for sure about the other one) have a problem with the windows fogging up (ALL of them) when it rains. Makes it a pain in the  back side to see out. Any idea what causes this?  Does anyone else have this problem or is is just me?

I've heard that shaving cream will help stop the fogging.  Might be worth a try!

Any chance these cars leak water from the rain? That might be why they're fogging up.

Shaving cream? I learn something every day.

I know my 76 leaks some water from under the dash on the passengers side, i think from the windshield. There is a split in the gasket in that area. I dont know of any leaks in the other two but they are afterall more than 30 years old and all original so who knows.

If I got it all sealed up inside would the fog go away? Or is it the nature of these cars?

I've wondered this to. I'm thinking it's more of a combined problem involving the insulation between the interior panels and carpet, and the the glass gaskets.

I think we will always have this problem with the older cars. They just don't have the quality of seals and insulation that the new cars have. I know my 01 PT Cruiser will fog up, do to me being wet or hot when it is cold, and all have to do is turn the defrost on and it dissapears. I think the older cars just don't have that ability!!

If you do not have air conditioning, then fogging happens. Mine does the same, but there are no water leaks inside.
The A/C removes humidity which causes the fogging.  Not sure if the Pinto engages the A/C compressor during defrost or not.

Rob, do you live where it gets pretty humid? Like the air is so heavy due to it? That's moisture in your car. It doesn't necessarily have to leak. It just has to have moisture, which is what condenses on the windows.

Every pinto I've known fogs the windows. Once during a heavy smoochin' episode with the girlfriend (now wife) on a cold day, I actually had frost on the inside of the windows! How 'bout that. JT :) ;)

I live in TX.  Yes, the air would be very humid and heavy.  In fact, that is how it is here right before a rain.  Just a few miles after a downpour, the inside fog would start forming.  The heater always brings in outside humid air and does hot dehumidify it as i do not have A/C.
Mine will fog up easy on a cold humid winter day with no rain.
The car stays outside, so it is always cold in the morning.  Adding a moiture generator (me) inside a cold humid car with very little interior volume with a very slow-warming heater and they fog easily.
A/C would help a lot.
