My front seats are like alot of others after 35 years.....the fabric inserts are torn and I've been trying to decide what to do about it. Call me weird, but I like the saddle interior with the saddle/black fabric and thought I'd see if i could find the original fabric and vinyl.
I looked on the SMS website, found what looked like the correct materials and ordered samples. They have stock on both and sent pricing. Now I have to determine how much the original look is worth. The fabric is $85/yd and the vinyl is $35/yd.
Has anyone gone the resto route on their seats? Is it worth it?
I have been contemplating this same thing with my '78. I only need to do my driver's seat.
I think Popbumper on this site (Chris) used the fabric from SMS in his 76 wagon and I think his recovered seats look great! You might check his wagon resto thread in the 'your project' section.
The only thing holding me back is that they only do fabrics in colors styles up to 1975 (when I last looked anyway).
The fabric costs seem very fair, but you would have to see what an upholstery guy would charge to sew it all up for ya.
Hey Gang:
I had my front seats redone by a local upholsterer. I bought the fabric and
vinyl from SMS auto fabrics. The fabric material and the vinyl were exactly
like the original. The final product is shown in the picture below and in my
opinion is far superior than the original. For example, if you look at the seats
in the picture the striping matches exactly on both of the seats. This was not
the case on the originals. Most people would not notice it but does make a
difference if you want it done right.
Thanks,

I just shopped a lot of upostery guys & I went with the one that was 1/2 of all the others. I got all the seats & headliner done for $400. I provided the headliner. It's all good!

Rob:
You'd be surprised to know I bought the car with the seats already done! The seats were probably the best part of the car, as you know, the rest of it was pretty much a mess.
Chris
I believe Larry Johnson had his done too. His car looks brand-new.
Hi guys, who and what is sms? Ineed to do the same thing with my seats. Please help me!! Thanks
SMS fabrics is a company in Oregon that stocks a lot of NOS fabrics, carpets, etc. for vintage autos. Give them a call, look them up on the web, if you give the color codes for your car to them they will send you samples of carpet, windlace, fabric, vinyl for your car. Awesome place!
Chris

thank you 77pintocw
Mine cost me 1,100 for the two front seats including material
If it helps any, I bought my interior fabric from Original Auto Interiors in Columbus, MI. Their price was good ($65 per yard) and it was original material, a perfect match. Keep in mind this is red, white, orange, black and pink plaid material for a 77 Mercury Bobcat. They sent a sample swatch to me and I bought the material straight away. The local auto interior shop is going to recover the seats for me. Their phone number is 586-727-2486 and their website is www.originalauto.com (http://www.originalauto.com), in case you're interested.
