Title: Swapping to a Mustang II 8inch rear from the 6and3/4?
Post by: russosborne on January 19, 2010, 08:18:23 PM
I read the faq and even posted a question there, but no response.
I have a stock 8inch rear from my project Mustang II. I have a different rear end to put in that, so I was going to use the 8 inch in the Pinto.
My question is will the Pinto 4cyl/auto trans driveshaft and ujoint fit with no mod's? I do not have the driveshaft from the II.

Thanks,
Russ

When I swapped the 8" into my '72, the shaft needed to be shortened 1 inch to allow clearance between the yoke and tailshaft. The rear end yoke uses the same u-joint. The pinto has a split size rear u-joint. The company that reworked mine installed a symmetrical joint at the rear, thus it fit sloppily in the rear yoke and I had to change it. Something to keep an eye out for. Good luck, JT

The rears swap, yes, right in. Use a manual shaft.

Thanks.
Was really hoping that I wouldn't have to mess with the driveshaft. Can't afford to spend any more money on car stuff after buying the II.
I was really thinking that I would just save the 8inch until/if the Pinto's stock rear dies, so I would have a quick replacement. Maybe I should just sell the 8 inch.

'73, 2.0, C-4 auto, 6-3/4"    - to -     '88, 2.3T, T-5, 8" = Perfect fit  ;D

It was one time when I didn't mind getting "shafted" when I bought the car.

I've been wanting to do this to my 78 for awhile, for the sake of having parts that actually exist, and that are available.
