Hi. I just got my 72 wagon and it is not getting much more then 10 miles to the gallon. What could be some of the problems causing this? It only has a little over 75,000 miles on it . If any one has any ideas please call me at 937-339-7177 and I will call you back. Thanks Mark.
What motor/trans does it have in it. does it run rough, smell like a lot of gas at the carb? Timing off maybe? clogged carb. leaking jets? could be many things more details would be helpful
Had the car been setting a long time?
Get a tuneup and replace the fuel filter, may even need the tank flushed.
PS: Bobcat, you got my message?
A complete tuneup on a newly purchased car is almost mandatory.
Check the colors of the spark plug tips. If black, it is running way too rich.
Check vacuum hoses / caps for leaks and breaks.
Carb might need a rebuild, too (a fairly easy task).
Choke working right? Fully open when warmed up?
Mileage should be closer to 18 in the city. I get 20 with my '78 2.3.

No sorry CB I hadn't gotten any mesages whats up? if you need directly email me it would be easier since im not on here like i used to be
I'm getting 16 in town and 24 highway consistently with my 76 pinto (2.3/4spd/3.00 gear)
Thats with a bigger engine. Id think with a 1.6 or 2.0 engine should do better, plus the earlier model pintos are lighter.
I think you should check out the fuel pump and the condition of the spark plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. Might also consider getting a GOOD coil and not a cheapie. Maybe an MSD? Check timing and points also. A point-to-electronic conversion would be an excellent idea.
don't forget to check the valve lash to!
