Title: Can you sand and repaint the interior panels
Post by: rdavis on January 15, 2010, 09:04:09 AM
Since kick and back quarter interior panels are so hard to find, my question is....can a person sand off the paint and repaint them.  My panels are in good shape but has flaking paint in parts, no cracks just paint appears to be peeling.  Any suggestions or ideas?  All help is appreciated.

Sounds like someone repainted them before...I've never seen one flake before. Scotchbrite pads work well for scuffing the plastic but if u have paint flaking that might be a tough one. One thing some people don't know when they paint panels is that an additive to make the paint more flexible should be added to the paint. That helps to stop future flaking. Don't use rattle cans...buy a good quality paint and the finish will last for years. Check with a local paint shop, they can give you all the info you need. I deal with Sherwin Williams myself. I like the 2 stage paints they have. JMO

Thanks for the info,

its hard to explain but its almost like too much heat exposure on them which caused it in some places to sort of bubble and flake and peel off.  They are not bad, but I guess I am sort of a perfectionist (at least thats what my wife accuses me off..lol).  Either way I guess I will give it a shot, I really wish someone had the rear quarters to sell, but repainting will work.  Thanks again for your response.

Look for a paint specifically designed for interior plastic parts - it is usually easy to find.

Hi Ronnie,
Given what I have heard about your car, black would be the way to go.  What color is your dash?
The kick panels will not need to be sanded, except in the few areas that are scratched.  Clan up really well and then paint with the hard plastic interior paint.  SEM paints come to mind for some reason.
Oh - here is why:

Here is my "Extreme makeover" thread from the Olds group:

A lot of the concepts apply to Pintos as well as other cars.
Towards the bottom of the first page is where I repainted some seat belt covers - worked perfectly!

Check out Eastwood.com for all your paint needs - great stuff!

Hope this helps!!

I agree with the black idea, I have been giving it some thought.  I plan on sending you some pics this weekend.  I appreciate your help and all the suggestions you have given.  I have also decided to install my own carpet instead of paying someone else to do it.  I am a bit concerned about the headliner though because of the stitching.  I am sure I can find a kit for it, or at least I am hoping..lol

YES! I talked with the folks at www.urethanesupply.com (http://www.urethanesupply.com), and the way you do it is as follows, especially where the plastic is heavily faded/dry/loose:

1) Sand liberally with 80 grit paper, followed by 150 grit (to reduce scratches)
2) Get some texturizing coat in a spray can from an automotive outlet. This allows you to recover the original plastic with a durable, textured finish that mimics the "roughness" of the original panels
3) Topcoat with SEM Color Coat, which comes in a variety of colors.

I did my wagon panels and they look WONDERFUL, darn near original.

I owe you one for the information....let me know if I can be of assistance sometime.

Plastic-Coat makes a paint specifically for vinyl. Worked great on mine.
