Ok, what is the difference in them? LOL I'll try to explain! LOL
I have 2 2.3 motors and automatic trannys. We sepperated one (74) and it had a small torque converter. Then we sepperated the 78, and it's torque converter was larger.
Can I put the larger converter and flex plate in the tranny that had the smaller one in it? If so, what will it do different? Will it give it more go power per say?
Most likely they are not the same tranny...(if I recall right ... I'm getting old) if the flywheel is seperate from the converter its a C4 other wise its a C3 which is more common and smaller.
Best of Luck
Frank
Both these have flywheels (flex/flux plates as my hubby calls them) that unbolt from the torque converter. When removing them the flux plate stays on the motor.
Kim it's FLEX. Fred ;D
does the Flywheel separate from the stall? or it its one piece?
Honestly the only difference should be ones a C4 and the other is from a C3.

LOL, Ok, I have no idea what a 'stall' is, besides someplace you keep a horse! LOL
This is how we took it all apart. Removed tranny and motor in one peice out of car. Then to seperate tranny from motor, hubby took all bolts that held it to the motor out, then he reached underneath and took bolts from torque converter area, I had to turn motor over till the bolt came around to the hole under tranny! Then the tranny was sepearte from the motor. Tranny and torque converter together and motor and flex plate together.
Yah, we kinda figured out that the tranny that came out of the 74 is a C3. The guy at the parts store had to get a seal for a C3 because the seal he gave us the first time was to big!
So, what is the difference in a C3 and a C4?
Gear ratios I think. Also, I believe, the C4 can stand up to more of a beating than the C3. Two things that would make it a must have for racers!

So a C3 will work just fine in the Squire!! Specially since it is going to be driven in a low pace way!! No big hurry to get there as long as I get there!! LOL
yes a c3 will be just fine my 76 wagon has the c3

As I understand it the, C3 has a three bolt torque converter and the C4 has a four bolt torque converter. The pans are also different. The C4 is a stronger transmission and more desireable.
If you have a C4 and decide to scrap it, make sure you keep the bellhousing as they are worth some money.
I agree, I have a C3 in my CW and it is fine for normal driving.
I have a C3 in mine and it works well. If you step up to a turbo then you will be better off with the C4. However for just daily driving the C# should work fine if of course it is in good condition.
PS Hang on to the C4. It is a hard piece to find.

We are sticking with that tranny and torque converter but the flex plate is going bad! He got jipped if that was a complete o/h! LOL The flex plate holes, the ones that you attatch it to the motor with are no longer round! Hubby say's we could use it but it would be better to have one with "round" holes not egg shape! LOL So we are looking for a good flex plate!
Kim if you cant find good 1 let me know. I can ship good 1. Fred :)
