Title: 5 speed manual in a pinto?
Post by: stang2 on December 05, 2004, 06:59:31 AM
Anybody ever put a different manual tranny in a pinto?  What works and what doesn't?  How bouta five speed from an 80's mustang?  Looking to try something new.  Thanks for your replies.

I have a 5-speed in my ride. D-shift will have to be cut, trans mount will have to be modified, and hole in the trans tunnel will have to be opened up in the front to clear the shifter. May have problems with cable working with fork.

Will I have to change flywheels?  Can I use the same clutch setup?  How much longer or shorter is the 5 speed than the 4 speed from a pinto?  Thanks

A mustang drive shaft fits perfect with no cutting, 79 thru early 90 something. Make sure you get the small u-joint model or you'll have to by a hybrid u-joint (big deal 20.00 at Auto Zone).  The crossmember can be redrilled but right on the edge. Someone else will have to explain the clutch and cable. I used the hydraulic set up and the Turbo Coupe clutch.

Use the same flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and cable. You will need more length on the cable to get it back to the through out arm. I nubolted the cable at the fender mount, added about 4 inches to the mount bracket and bolted it back up. this will extend the cable further back. Also, you may need to grind a little on your rack mount on that side.
