Title: WTB PINTO RAG JOINT
Post by: dick1172762 on December 02, 2004, 06:00:31 PM
Any body know where you can buy a Pinto Rag Joint? Many years ago you could buy rag joint made out of plastic. Any ideas on this? Thanks.

I assume you're talking about the rubber disc in the steering shaft? If so you can get those at almost any auto part stores in the "Help" section otherwise known as motormite. There are 2 kinds I think you need the one that the part # ends in 00. If you haven't done it before it's not a bolt in ordeal you have to grind the heads of some rivets and then replace them with bolts. I found it was easier to take the whole colum out because I couldn't get the steering shaft to come loose from the column. Just make sure you put everything on back the way it came off. I thought I had but I put mine back 180* off and my turn signal cam doesn't work right.

I know on my Pinto when that broke I went to the junkyard to replace the whole unit and got it installed. Once I did replace that part my steering was alot tighter. What sucked was the metal bracket was broken and had to bind up to steer the car. What made it worse was the fact I drove the car 160 miles all over the road since the shaft was broken.

Good luck.

When I got my wagon, took it for the first cruise after I put a master cylinder in it cause it did'nt have any breaks at all except for the hand brake, were crusin down the road and the steering was kinda loose, or a lotta loose, went back home , lifted the hood to see the problem. what a shocker, no rag joint at all. Next day, pulled the steering colum all the way out, alot easier that way to replace the rag joint that way.
good luck, a easy fix and you'l love the way it handels ;D
