at least for a LITTLE while. Saturday I'm removing the heater box (non-AC) to replace a dead blower motor. While I'm in there I figured the $35 for a new heater core would save headaches down the road. I know there's tons of leaves and who knows WHAT else in there! As long as the cooling system is drained I'm also replacing the upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses (doesn't this stop?)
Sunday is front brakes. They went metal to metal a while ago and I did a pad slap just to get it back on the road. She'll get new rotors, inner and outer bearings, seals, and brake hoses.
I'm expecting a comfortable ride on Monday......
Well, the Saturday work is done. Took 7 hours, but once I got everything apart I had to clean it. All the ducts were removed and cleaned as well as the inside and outside of the case. Replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses while it was drained, too. With the amount of leaves/trail trash that came out it was no wonder nothing worked. It now has a killer heater and defroster and the old car funk is gone from the circulating air. Oh, and BTW, it WAS mandatory to remove the coin box and bracket to get the assembly out. I wound up reusing one heater hose (3/4") since one is 5/8" and the other is 3/4".
Tomorrow...... brakes/hoses/rotors. Fun, fun..... ;D
Sounds like a productive day!!
I still need to do that to my drive (the Ghost). I bet the heater would work better if I did! LOL I did do it to the Green Machine when I first got her, but I still need to take it back apart and trim the sagging door so the levers move better!
Good luck with the brakes tomorrow!! Looks like you are making great progress!!
Well, Sunday was almost uneventful. The rotors and brake hoses went on without a hitch. Reassembled everything and decided to check the rears. The previous owner said the brakes were "just done" before I bought it. Uh, not exactly. As a matter of fact the rivets were just starting to hit. I called around looking for a set of rear shoes for a '74 and nobody stocks them. This morning I called my go to place and they couldn't get them for 3 days. I decided to check the listings to see if there is a difference between the '74 and '75 shoes. Sure enough, but all the hardware and drums are the same. :surprised: The parts house can get me the '75s this afternoon, so I'm going to pick them up and compare them to what I have. I remembered that the PO said the drivetrain was replaced with a '75 setup, so we'll see. He said the brakes were just done too, so........
Well, I got the shoes for a '75, pulled her into the garage and went at it. The shoes ARE different between a 74 and 75, but only in one minor way. The 75 shoe has a smaller
A smaller...what? lol ;)
To continue.....
The only difference is the size of the triangular hole for the e-brake lever. The 75 is smaller than the 74 and earlier. Somehow, mine wound up with one of each so I modified the 74 lever to fit the 75 shoe. With the terrible availability of the 74 and earlier shoes, people might consider using the more readily available 75 and newer shoes. Order new 1975 L&R e-brake levers from Wagner and you're good to go. BTW, I have the 9 x 1.75" wagon brakes.... I don't know if this applies to earlier non-wagons.
***After checking, it looks like nobody makes the parking brake levers, so if anyone has a '75 left hand lever please let me know. I'd rather use an original part than one I had to modify.***
