Title: Mustang 4 speed
Post by: Carolina Boy on December 13, 2009, 01:32:44 PM
Which 4 speed trans were used in the V8 77-78 'tang. Toploader or T10. I am thinking on doing some trading here for a T10 a guy has. I know a T5 would be better and newer but the change over could get expensive. T10 and Top;oader would bolt right up to my Bell housing. Opinions??

the t5 bell should work on your small block i would think not sure. Give you a overdrive that way, and if you go 85 or newer its world class, handles a little more tourqe.

My bell is from a 67 289, has a 3 speed toploader from a Fairlane. Just looking for ideas. A T5 would be great but around here, expensive.

Yes they are harder to find now. The trick would be to find a whole car sitting on blocks or in some back yard that they would like to be rid of for a small cost. then you would have bell. trans. driveshaft, and possible a rear end.

With the many tail shaft lenghts and shifter locations, T10s and Toploaders give alot to consider. I know T5s in the Mustang and Pintos have that location problem that makes cutting the shifter hole. RUG-AW was in the 70-71 tang. Wonder if that would have the right tailshaft and shifter location?

with my 71 the t5 went thru the same hole no cutting but not sure on the later ones but cutting it wouldnt be that bad anyway.

If i was going to cut the hole i would cut around the hole move it to the new location and weld it back in, then you wouldnt mess up the boot hole, and the drive shaft can be cut at your local driveline place, so really anything will work just get what you want or whats available and with a few adjustments it will work.

When I put a 4-speed-bell housing-flywheel-from a 1976 mustang II V-8 in my pinto,I had to cut the shifter hole back a little  because the bell housing is about I think 1/2 longer. When I wanted to put a 5 speed in it with the same bell housing it wouldn't work because the end shaft on the trans was 1/2 inch short.so be careful on the bell housing length and trans input shaft.

All the V8 Mustang II's used the Borg-Warner SR-4 Transmission, which Ford called the RAD. The T10 and Top-Loader 4 speed were history by then (GM still used the T10).

You can use a bell and T5 from any fox body mustang with a 5.0 they are plentiful and cheap here in Nor Cal. Check SF bay area Craig's List auto Parts  http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pts/ (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pts/)

Good Hunting to you

Skunky56, The shipping from Calif. to NC would be a killer.

78CW, the SR-4 was the toploader look-a-like, the 3 and overdrive trans?

No, the SR-4 looks like a T5 with a very long tailhousing. It evolved into the T4 which metamorphed into the modern T5 transmission. They are all related.
