Title: How long does a factory clutch last, and...
Post by: 78txpony on December 10, 2009, 09:36:00 AM
how hard is it to replace?
My Pony with the 2.3L and 4 speed still has the original clutch in it.
It has more than 153,000 miles on it and taught 3 kids and one adult how to drive a stick.   :o :o :o  It still drives great. I never heard of a clutch lasting this long, especially after the abuse of 3 leadfooted teens.  Long ago I would slip the heck out of it at high RPMs to get the tires to smoke.  ;D ;D

When will this clutch go out and what will be the warning signs of it failing?  It passes the test where you set the parking brake and try to take off in 4th gear - kills the engine easily.

How hard is it to change?  I assume driveshaft and tranny get dropped, motor stays in car.
Any thoughts?

It depends on how its driven; my wife's 4 cyl. Mustang clutch wore out at about 135k miles- her commue was in a lot of stop & go traffic. I sold my 88 F-250 at 140k, and it was the original clutch. A buddy had a 5.0 Mustang that he sold with 330k on the factory clutch- he had a 60 mile, all freeway commute, and he took it on a lot of long highway trips.
Its hard to describe what the sign of failing is- if i remember, it felt like the car did not move until the pedal was almost all the way out, and it kind of felt like no matter how quickly i let the clutch out, the car would go without much of a lurch forward.

My '72 2000cc 4-speed had 264,000 hard miles on the original pressure plate. I had changed just the disk during a rering at 108,000. The clutch was still holding fine when I swapped out for a 2.3. All the stock type clutchs I've used since felt mushy compared to that original. The worst part about a pinto clutch job is that the trans and bell have to come out together. If you have any lower end oil leaks I'd venture on pulling the engine too; its about as easy. My $0.02.

Wow - it looks like the Pinto was fairly easy on clutches.  ;D I had heard of some Huhn-Duhs requiring new clutches every 75K...

Fred, I wasn't needing a new clutch, but it might be good to get a kit and throw it in the trunk until the time comes (if it ever does...)
Does your set also come with the pilot bearing and the release bearing (standard issue in the kits out there)?  Got a clutch cable and rubber boot to go with that?  hehe... If I do it, might as go all the way.  Maybe I will change the tranny oil for the first time, also!  :o

Thats the wrong clutch for a pinto. That looks like a 5 speed mustang clutch, it has 10 splines. The pinto has 26 small splines rather than 10 large ones. This is a pinto clutch. Enlarge the picture to see the large number of splines. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-MUSTANG-PINTO-CAPRI-COUGAR-NEW-CLUTCH-SET_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2553cedc03QQitemZ160319855619QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2156wt_966 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-MUSTANG-PINTO-CAPRI-COUGAR-NEW-CLUTCH-SET_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2553cedc03QQitemZ160319855619QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2156wt_966)

A clutch job on a pinto is easy, just a few hours work. You can even do it by yourself. Been there done that on more than one pinto :)
